DOE recognizes SM Prime for its efforts in renewable energy and resource conservation

“These awards affirm SM Prime’s commitment to sustainable operations that benefit both the environment and our communities. We are proud to contribute to a greener future through our active energy conservation.” ~Engr. Hans Sy, Jr., SM Engineering and Design Development President
SM Center Pulilan receives award in the Large Building Category at the recently held Energy Efficiency Excellence Awards.

One of the biggest integrated real estate developers in Southeast Asia, SM Prime Holdings, Inc. (SM Prime), won major honors at the Department of Energy's (DOE) Sustainable Energy Awards and Energy Efficiency Excellence Awards.

SM Prime won awards at the Energy Efficiency Excellence Awards for SM Center Pulilan's Large Building Category and SM City Tanza and SM City Tuguegarao's New and Existing Building Category. Following the submission of the nominees' Annual Energy Utilization and Annual Energy Efficiency and Conservation Reports, the three malls were awarded under the Energy Management in Industries and Buildings division.

The DOE evaluates the businesses' energy savings and application of the Policy on Energy Management Systems in what are known as the EEE Awards. Through the extensive use of energy-efficient fixtures and equipment, such as Light-Emitting Diode (LED) lighting, building management systems, and building insulation to reduce electricity consumption, the awards showed SM Prime's dedication to appropriate energy management.

Since the Sustainable Energy Awards took place at the same time as the department's Renewable Energy Market (REM) full commercial operations were ceremoniously launched, DOE Undersecretary Sharon Garin oversaw the awarding for both events.

Department of Energy (DOE) Undersecretary Sharon Garin congratulates SM Engineering Design & Development (EDD) Vice President for Operations Engr. Teodoro Bautista for SM Mall of Asia (MOA)’s win of the first DOE Sustainable Energy Award for private institutions.

In the Philippines, SM Mall of Asia (MOA), the flagship mall of SM Prime, defeated other establishments to win DOE's inaugural Sustainable Energy Award for a Private Institution. Installed on top of the complex's parking structures, SM MOA's solar photovoltaic system—which consists of 40 inverters and 10,426 solar panels—is its most notable renewable energy feature.

With a peak energy output of 2.7 megawatts (MW), the system can supply 1,790 households with electricity for a full year. As of right now, 35 SM Supermalls have solar panels installed on their roof decks, with a peak energy output of 44 MW.

Most SM Supermalls take part in DOE's Interruptible Load Program (ILP), contributing 110MW of electricity to each ILP activity. With SM MOA offering the highest committed capacity at 15.92 MW, SM Prime makes the biggest contribution from the private sector.

Renewable energy and appropriate waste management are key components of SM Prime's objective to reach Net Zero by 2040. Together, they support national goals that will help the Philippines move toward a better and more promising future.

SM City Baguio's Rainwater Treatment Facility: A Model for Water Sustainability

"There is a critical need for reliable and safe water sources. And SM City Baguio's rainwater treatment facility is a commendable initiative that directly addresses this need. We hope that other private establishments can adopt similar projects for the efficient use of our water resources." ~Benjamin Magalong, Baguio City Mayor
SM City Baguio's groundbreaking rainwater treatment facility has treated over 17,000 cubic meters of rainwater into drinkable water.

SM City Baguio is making significant strides in water stewardship with the launch of its innovative rainwater treatment facility (RTF) in July 2023. In the months since, the facility has already converted over 17,111.80 cubic meters of rainwater - enough to fill 7 Olympic-size swimming pools or over 6,800 standard water tankers - into potable water for the SM mall's operations and lessees' use.

This initiative supplements the mall's water supply from the Baguio Water District, making a significant contribution to the city's water security and residents' safety. The RTF, located on the mall's basement level, meets 30% of the mall's total monthly average requirement for safe drinking water and food preparation.

The RTF employs a meticulous six-step treatment process, with equipment monitored and parameters checked in real time to ensure peak performance. The processed water is regularly tested by the city's accredited testing facility and consistently meets all water portability standards.

The rainwater treatment facility (RTF) of SM City Baguio utilizes a rigorous six-step treatment process with real-time monitoring, ensuring processed water always adheres to portability requirements.

"This facility is a testament to SM Prime Holdings' commitment to sustainable operations and to the well-being of the communities we serve. By maximizing rainwater harvesting and treatment, we are not only reducing our reliance on the city's water supply but also contributing to a healthier and more resilient Baguio City." ~Engr. Liza Silerio, SM Supermalls’ Vice President and Sustainability and Resilience Head

The RTF's impact extends beyond the mall. With less reliance on the city's water supply, water haulers have been able to serve more households, especially during times of water scarcity throughout the city.

SM City Baguio's rainwater treatment facility is a shining example of how businesses can play an important role in meeting critical community needs through innovative and sustainable solutions.

Local Schools get mayor upgrade with SM's Brigada Eskwela

Employees from SM City Grand Central contributed to the sustainability of the school environment by planting a diverse range of trees and vegetable shrubs. This initiative not only enhanced the school's aesthetic appeal but also promoted a greener, more sustainable campus, providing students with a fresh and eco-friendly learning space.

SM Supermalls in Grand Central, Sangandaan, and Valenzuela have completed their annual Brigada Eskwela initiative for the school year 2024-2025, which focused on three schools throughout Metro Manila. The program, which supported the Department of Education's Bayanihan para Sa Matatag na Paaralan, ended on July 31 and resulted in significant improvements to school facilities and the learning environment.

SM City Grand Central's Brigada Eskwela initiative tackled a crucial issue with a water re-installation project. This resolved the long-standing water supply problems and ensured reliable access to clean water at Morning Breeze Elementary School.

SM City Grand Central, through SM Foundation Inc, has also provided 2,750 new textbooks to enrich the students' learning experience during its Brigada Eskwela.

At Morning Breeze Elementary School in Caloocan City, SM City Grand Central went above and beyond the usual touch-ups to address the pressing issue of water access. The mall spearheaded the water re-installation project, resolving long-standing supply issues that had disrupted daily school operations.  The newly installed water system is expected to improve the lives of more than a hundred students and staff by providing consistent access to clean water. This upgrade will also benefit the school's gardening initiatives, which are centered on environmental education and food sustainability. Furthermore, SM City Grand Central has generously donated vegetable seedlings to support these gardening initiatives. Simultaneously, SM City Valenzuela renovated Caruhatan West Elementary School, and SM Center Sangandaan improved Andres Bonifacio Elementary School.
