Good morning! Have you missed me? This year has been extremely difficult, and I'll share about it a bit over the next few weeks, but life is getting back to normal and I thought we'd celebrate that with a fun new tutorial!!! I shared this on Saturday on Instagram in celebration of Sew with a Jelly Roll Day. :)
Today, I'm sharing my Modern X's and O's pattern. It's really very easy and doesn't look like your typical jelly roll pattern (I think). I hope you enjoy. Let's get started!
First, you need to matching jelly rolls. Sort your jelly rolls by color. I used Sweet Baby Jane by Me and My Sisters. They are older jelly rolls I've had on a shelf for a long time but they are perfect for this one. In my case, most of my strips are pink and purple. The yellow and green were pretty evenly matched in a smaller quantity and I had enough white strips, with different color prints, to make up the last set.
Next, we are making strip sets. In my case, two matching purples, yellows/greens, and pinks with a white in the middle. Sew together along the long edges and press. Take each strip set and sub cut into 14-1/2" squares. You'll be able to get 2 out of each strip set.
Using the 45-degree angles on your cutting mat as a guide, cut each square in half on both diagonals.
Rearrange your quarters as shown below and sew! Each 14-1/2" square will make 2 blocks.
It's so easy and they come out just beautifully! Here are 4 blocks together.
I haven't had time to finish up the quilt (since the idea came to me as I was trying to fall asleep last Wednesday, naturally), but here's a mockup I did in EQ7 to give you an idea of the finish.
I really hope you like it and if you make it I'd love to see your version!!! I'll share more of my recent projects over the next few days. So glad to be back!!!

ReplyDeleteoh! going to have to pin this! I don't have jelly rolls, but I have a huge stack of 22 x 2.5 inch strips that I got from our last guild quilt retreat. I think I can give this a try for sure!
ReplyDeleteThat's a beautiful design and will make a lovely quilt. I love my EQ7. Thank you for sharing the tutorial! Happy sewing! Andrea
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you're finding normal again! Yea! You know, I've several jelly rolls, but yours is the first pattern that I really liked AND I believe I can actually make! Thank you so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteLove your modern version! Thank you for the tutorial - I'm tempted to make one, though it will lack the modern fabrics. Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI don't know what happened to my comment on this post from last week. Eaten by the internets! I really appreciated your information on how to do this, and the final top is so great and happy.
