Chapter 4, Problem 3E

Explanation of Solution

Algorithm to develop a monthly balance sheet:

Step 1: Assign the secret code to a string variable.

Step 2: Get the guess value from the user and store it in a variable.

Step 3: Using “for” loop, loop through the length of the secret code and check if the character at index “i” for both user entered code and secret code matches.

Step 4: If they match, then store that index value into another variable (contains position of the correct value). Then, calculate sum of the correct values.

Step 5: Display the position and their sum.

Step 6: If the user enters the correct secret code then, the program prints the positive message.

Step 7: If the user enters incorrect code, then the program gets another code from the user.

Step 8: Continue this process till the user enters the correct code.

Program:

//Import required package

import java.util.Scanner;

//Define the Main class

public class Main

{

    //Define main method

    public static void main(String[] args)

    {

        //Declare required variables

        String secretCode = "53840", userCode;

        int totalGuess = 1;

        //Create an object for Scanner class

        Scanner sc = new Scanner (System.in);

        //Get the secret code from the user

        System.out.print("Enter the secret code: ");

        userCode = sc.next();

        //do till the totalGuess is less than 10

        while(totalGuess < 10)

        {

            //Declare required variables

            int correct = 0,

            sum = 0;

            //Loop through the length of the code

for(int i = 0; i < secretCode.length(); i++)

            {

//Check if both the characters of "secretCode" and "userCode" matches

if(secretCode.charAt(i) == userCode.charAt(i))

                {

                    //Increment the variable

                    correct++;

                    //calculate sum

sum += Integer.parseInt (secretCode.charAt(i) + "");

                }

            }

            //Print the values
