Chapter 1, Problem 1.5E
Interpretation Introduction

(a)

Interpretation:

The use of the feedback control system to accomplish the given objective is to be explained. Also, the sensor, actuator, disturbances, and appropriate control action taken is to be determined.

Concept introduction:

A control system is a system that regulates or monitors the behavior or working of other devices/systems using control loops. It can be used to control a single device or large industrial processes. There are two types of control system which can be used to control the processes. These are the feedback control system and the feedforward control system.

The feedback control system considers the output of the system and then compares it with the desired value to adjust the measured value to provide accurate results whereas in the feedforward control system, disturbances are taken into account beforehand and they are rectified to control it from deviating from the desired set point.

Interpretation Introduction

(b)

Interpretation:

The information utilized by the driver in addition to the distance between the two vehicles to avoid collision of the car with another car ahead of it is to be determined in accordance with the feedforward control mechanism.

Gas "B" is being recycled and diluted. Air and gas B, which has a large molecular size, flow into a well-mixed tank of volume 15 ft³. At the outlet, a molecular sieve prevents any B from exiting the tank. At the outlet, air leaves at velocity 4 ft/s and the area is 1 ft³. Assume standard atmospheric conditions for air. Gas B enters through a cylindrical pipe with a non-uniform density p=C₁₂ r +C2 where R2 is the radius R₂ of pipe 2. Gas B enters at a 45° angle with the horizontal and with a spatially uniform (plug flow) velocity v₂ = 0.02exp(-0.01t) ft/s. At the air inlet, the velocity is 10 ft/s and the area is 0.5 ft². At the outlet, the velocity is 4 ft/s and the area is 1 ft³. Assume standard atmospheric conditions for air. (a) Determine m₂ = [p(v.n)dA, the mass flow rate of B into the tank (leave in variable form). (b) Determine the tank density as a function of time. Assume m₂ =CV2 (check sign) regardless of your answer to part (a), where CB is a constant equal to .03 slug/ft and…
The Keystone XL pipeline is a controversial proposed expansion of the currently existing Keystone pipeline, which brings heavy Canadian crude oil into the United States. Once transported, this heavy crude oil is blended with lighter American crude oil to meet the specifications of refineries, where the oil is processed into products such as gasoline. Before being transported, the heavy crude oil is blended with a diluting fluid to reduce viscosity and pumping costs. The Keystone XL pipeline was originally proposed to transport 830,000 barrels of oil (not including diluents) per day (BPD) in a 1,179-mile long, 36-inch diameter steel pipe. Take the oil to be 22° American Petroleum Institute (API) gravity (i.e., heavy crude oil) with a viscosity of 300 cSt (centistokes) after the oil has been diluted to 65% of the flow to lower the viscosity for transport. The specific gravity of the oil (SGoil) can be found via Eq. 1 below, SGil = 141.5 API +131.5 (1) Neglecting the change in density of…
