I couldn't resist remaking the Blessing Day Bonnet. This time in a blush pink color (actually called "Whisper"). When I first made it I was in a rush to complete it for Tess' blessing day. I really wanted her to wear something made just for her and I couldn't find the pattern I had in mind. So I figured it out, all in one shot, late at night. It worked well enough and I thought she looked beautiful in it, but it didn't fit perfectly. So I just made a few little adjustments to the shaping. Of course, it's over two months later and Tess is bigger, so now it's a little on the small side, but I think the pattern is improved.
I just love this type of baby bonnet. Covers the ears, ties under the neck to stay put, nips in at the nape, and frames the baby's face so beautifully. It's so old fashioned. A theme of mine, as you've probably seen.
Everything about this bonnet makes it so wearable--the color, the cotton yarn, the light weight. Just the right thing to keep her warm but too hot. I may have to work this out in a larger size. I'll share it if I do.

I love the ringlet curls formed by the ties. A complete and happy accident. Maybe they'd lay flat if I blocked them? I haven't tried it because I like the way they curl under her chin.

I want to make this as an Easter bonnet for my 10 month old. She is in 90% for head size (it's ok, she's 90% for height too!!) so I definitely need a bigger size. Is there any way you can help me with that? Btw, I have made several Best Baby Cloches, they are great! Everyone loves them!
@Courtney: I understand all about kiddo heads on the high end of the chart! What a cute idea to use this bonnet as an easter bonnet! I haven't tried sizing up but if you can try it on your baby as you go you should be able to figure it out. I would repeat row 8 (v-stitches) a few more times--you'll need to see how this works and determine whether or not you need to increase on these rows to maintain the right shape. If you do increase, you'll want to try and maintain the same proportion of unworked sc when you start the straight rows, and then likely add more of the sc rows. I hope that helps! Makes me think I should try it larger but I'm not sure if I'll be able to work it in! You have to let me know if you do it! I'd love to see pictures!

I fell in love with this bonnet the first time I saw it, in its original post. I wanted to make it but had no reason to. Then, I bookmarked the page when I saw the updated version - by then my cousin was expecting a baby girl! I've just mailed her teeny bonnet to her and can't wait to see a picture of her sweet babe wearing it. Now I have another baby on the way, and am planning on making another bonnet, if this baby is a girl. :)

@Melissa: This is Paton's Grace yarn in "Whisper." I've got a link to it in the first paragraph. It's a beautiful yarnb--I love it! It's 100% mercenized cotton. You can buy it online too.
When I start the sc rows (1-15), do I ch1 and turn at the end of each row? When I look at your picture it only looks like there are about 8 rows. I'm confused.
@Jennifer: Yes, you chain 1 and turn at the end of each row. I left that out of the original instructions on the blog post and just fixed it. Thanks for your comment!

Do you have any suggestions for making the pattern smaller and maintaining the proportions? It is intended for the baby's christening, approximately 3 months after its birth.

I love love love this bonnet!!! I have a question though. Do you know the gauge? I'm using the same hook and yarn, but it seems to be coming out larger than I imagine a 3 months old head would be. It has the 6 rows of v stitches and 16 rows of sc.
It's for my niece and she lives across the country so unfortunately I can't try it on her.
I pinned this ages ago with the comment, "One day I might have a baby girl." Yesterday I found out that after my first two boys, I am, in fact, having a girl baby. (I was so certain I'd be the lone female in our family!) I am just so excited to make this for her!
I'm on row 8 of the single crochets and this bonnet is shaping up to be large enough to fit my 10-year old son! I'm on track with the correct number of stitches & I'm using a "G" hook as called for in the pattern. Why do I have so much trouble with patterns??? I LOVE this bonnet and have 2 grandbabies on the way (our first - but we get 2 within 2 months). Can you help me figure out why my bonnet is so big?
Hi, thanks so much for this beautiful bonnet, I made one up and my friend loved it, she asked me to make one for her 6 month old. Did you ever make the pattern for larger sizes? I was wondering if I added another round of the v-stitches and perhaps another 2 or 3 rows of the single crochet worked in rows this might do it? I would be grateful for any help from anyone! My friend does not live close enough to be able to try it on! Even some measurements of 6 month old bonnets would help! Many thanks in advance! Elli
I love this pattern but being a "hat" newbie I'm having trouble. I am now on the second row of the sc after having left 12 unfinished. My work is still flat like a potholder. I have ripped this out before for the same problem. When does this shape become more like a bonnet for a little head? Please help...this is for my daughter's first child due in December. Thank you!
