The Toys I Liked The Best: AFB looks back at 2011

The year is at an end, and that means it's time for me to look back at the toys and statues I've reviewed this year and choose the best. Far from an industry-wide "best of" list, these are simply my subjective choices of the items I'm happiest to have in my collection from the items I've reviewed during the year that will be nearly over when this post goes live. This blog has always been about my own journey as a collector, and this list is no different - its just my opinion!

With that out of the way, let's get started. I'm going to start with the smallest figures I collect and work my way up!

My favourite 3 3/4" figure from the year was the Marvel Universe Silver Samurai figure. This figure came in one of Habro's Comic Series Two-Packs. While the Wolverine figure it came with was instantly forgettable amongst all of the other MU Wolvie versions, the Slver Samurai was am amazing effort. The level of detail, particularly in the sculpting of all of the elements of Silver Samurai's armor, put this figure a step above my other favourites in this scale, which were the Marvel Universe versions of Taskmaster and Thanos.

My favourite Male 6" figure from the year was the Marvel Select Magneto figure. I will always take issue with the awkward hip articulation on the male Marvel Select figures, but that wasn't enough to knock this fantastic figure out of first place in my book. Magneto's mask and cape are brilliantly constructed, and his wild eyed facial expression and powerful pose are fabulous. I'm usually not too fussed about the Marvel Select bases, but this crushed remnants of Xavier's School for the Gifted that Magneto stands astride just takes this figure to the top of the pile for me. Just below Magneto, I really enjoyed the DC Direct Brightest Day Deadman (with Boston Brand head), Masters of the Universe Classics Clawful, Batman Legacy Series 1 Joker and DC Universe Classics Bronze Tiger figures.

My favourite Female 6" Figure of the year won by a mile - The Masters of the Universe Classics Queen Marlena / Captain Glenn figure was a real gem. Granted, Mattel had a bigger budget to work with for this figure as it was a SDCC Exclusive,  but they certainly went all out. It's not just the fact that the set contains the parts to make two completely different figures, it's how The Four Horsemen went about it that makes this figure such a winner. Nothing else in this category made it close to this standard, but I did enjoy the DC Direct Brightest Day Mera and MOTUC Catra figures.

I can't separate the two top contenders for my favourite PVC / Vinyl Figure, so I'm letting the Kotobukiya Wonder Woman Bishoujo Statue and the DC Direct Ame-Comi Raven Statue share the title. The Ame-Comi line took awhile to win me over with its unique takes on the DC characters, but a piece like Raven shows the line has really hit its stride.  The goth stylings and the incredible detail on Raven's cape make this a clear winner. As for Kotobukiya's Wonder Woman, there's no better example of comic accurate amazement. Koto's Marvel Bishoujo line had a bit of a stumble this year with scale issues, but the sheer beauty of their efforts with Wonder Woman kept the DC Bishoujo line going strong.

For my choice for my favourite Over-Sized Action Figure or Build-A-FIgure, I have to go back to Marvel Select for their Marvel Select Juggernaut Figure. Marvel Select has excelled at the larger figures in recent times, and while Juggernaut doesn't surpass their brilliant effort with Abomination, it is a brilliant figure. It captures the character very well, and has a great level of articulation for a figure of this size. I like the way that Marvel Select has made an effort to do some team building, and Juggy is a great addition to the Marvel Select X-verse. Another favorite in this character would be the DC Universe Classics Bane figure.

I also have two items to list for my favourite Bust or Mini-Bust: Bowen Designs' Son of Satan Mini-Bust and DC Direct's Heroes of the DCU Demon Mini-Bust. The Son of Satan bust hardly qualifies as "mini", considering the height given to it by the pyre of translucent flames Daimon Hellstrom rests on and the staff he raises in the air. Walter O'Neal has sculpted a brilliant representation of this classic Defender that contends with most full sized statues. Meanwhile, DC Direct's Demon Mini-Bust makes the list not just to applaud DCD for its character selection, but for the outstanding sculpt of Etrigan the Demon, including his trademark inscription which runs along the base. This was one of my favourite DC Direct releases of the year, and a stunning addition to any collection.

Hot Toys' amazing effort with their Ghost Rider with Hellcycle easily makes him my favourite 12" Action Figure of the Year. Once I saw this figure previewed, I knew that my resolve not to delve into Hot Toys collecting was about to come to an end. All I can say is that I can't think of a better way to break a vow! The craftsmanship that has gone in to every aspect of this figure and vehicle is amazing, and the light-up features are a giant bonus. Not in the same league, but fun to have, was the Marvel Universe Sentinel figure.

I'm leaning more and more towards collecting statues these days, so there's a lot of competition for my favourite Statue under 18". Despite the large field, there's a hands down winner here, and that is the Bowen Designs M.O.D.O.K. Statue. This was a Previews Exclusive that was worth chasing down in every regard. You don't need to be a fan of Captain America and Hulk foes to appreciate the effect of this intricately detailed sculpt which displays M.O.D.O.K. in all his gruesomeness. Check out those teeth!  Also at the top of the list in this category would be the DC Direct Cover Girls Harley Quinn Statue, the Kotobukiya Danger Room Colossus Statue and the Bowen Designs Valkyrie Statue

For my choice for my favourite Statue 18" or Over, I have to go with the Sideshow Exclusive Premium Format She-Hulk figure. I have found the Sideshow Premium Format Figures a bit hit and miss, but there's nothing missing in this amazing effort. I love the pose, the choice of costume and the brilliant head sculpt that sums up She-Hulk perfectly. The Exclusive version, which has She-Hulk holding a dislodged parking meter, brings a level of humour which is so appropriate for She-Hulk, and makes this a real winner. Other choices here would be the Sideshow Premium Format Bucky Barnes as Captain America and the Sideshow Nightcrawler Comiquette.

So, that's my list of highlights from the year, but that's just my take. Please respond with your own in the comments below or at the AFB Forum!

That's also a fitting bookend for another year at AFB. Thanks for another year of support and fun.

Happy and Prosperous New Year to all - and here's to the year of collecting and reviews to come!

Until next time!

You call that an "All Star"? Mattel announces the line that will replace DCUC.

Mattel has announced the line that will take the place of DC Universe Classics when it ends at retail after Wave 20, and all I can say is that Mattel and I have very different ideas of what an “All Star” is.

Here’s what was announced today at Mattycollector.com, followed by my own thoughts:

“November 7, 2011

DC Universe Fans,
As you know, the DC Universe Classics line is finishing up at retail with the highly anticipated Wave 20, including the Fan's Choice Collect and Connect® Nekron. Then, following Wave 20, we'll introduce a completely new DC Universe 6" line at retail, the DC Universe All-Stars. Designed especially to complement the DC Universe Club Infinite Earths figures, this new line will blow your collector mind!

You first saw Larfleeze at New York Comic Con. Here's another look at him, plus your first official sneak peek at the rest of the figures from the first mix at retail…

Larfleeze: The wielder of orange light finally joins the DC Universe! This collection-essential figure builds out the Corps.

Superboy Prime: The only super-powered being on Earth Prime, he comes complete with his Anti-Monitor armor.

Flashpoint Plastic Man: Check out this edgy new version of Plastic Man from the popular Flashpoint comics.

Batman Beyond: Behold our sweet take on the iconic Caped Crusader.

So there they are – the four amazing figures that make up the first mix at retail. It's been an awesome year for the DC Universe line and with the DC Universe Club Infinite Earths program on Mattycollector.com and the DC Universe All-Stars line at retail, 2012 is going to be even better!

–Matty”

My thoughts: I have no issue with Larfleeze and Superboy Prime getting their shot at Mattel 6” glory, and I’m glad they are appearing at retail instead of in the Club Infinite Earths Subscription. Superboy Prime can be counted as Legion villain so that works for me, and his headsculpt actually looks like a vast improvement over the DC Direct version. Batman Beyond is a re-issue, and I was expecting that we would also see some re-dos at this point. I can live with that too,

Flashpoint Plastic Man, however, is a big worry. Why on Earth such a minor character from an alternative universe mini-series can be considered “mainstream” enough to appear at retail is beyond me. Was Mattel really chomping at the bit to make this character? Is a non-stretchy Plastic Man really going to be a retail gem? It’s hard to imagine this is anything other than a Geoff Johns ego stroke. Le sigh.

Of course, the saving grace of these figures is they don’t have CnC parts and they’re not in the sub. Still, if Flashpoint Plastic Man is an indication of what we can expect to see in DC All Stars, I may be buying even less of these than I thought.

DCUC Wave 18: Or, what does it take for a '70s Interracial Sterotype to get a full costume around here?

It’s been quite a while since I had a chance to review a wave of Mattel’s DC Universe Classics line. This is mainly due to my decision to skip Wave 17, the Deputy Lanterns wave, and wait for Wave 18 to come around. I’ve had my photos of this wave done for awhile but have been distracted by other pieces and real life events, so I’m just now getting around to doing my review of DC Universe Wave 18.

In the same way that the Wave 17 line-up held no interest for me due to the “flash-in-the-pan” nature of the character designs, the choices for Wave 18 were controversial for some collectors. The majority of these characters originated in the Super Friends cartoon from the 1970’s, which is a touchy subject for some collectors who feel that these characters aren’t comics-based enough to justify a spot in a “Classics” line. I am in the other camp, as it was the Super Friends series that lit the flame of interest in the DC Universe that has lasted all of these years. These characters have a special place in my childhood memories, and so I am delighted to have the chance to own them in this form.

There are two characters in this wave who don’t match the Super Friends set, and I’ll start with those, as they represent the high point and the low point of the wave for me. Bronze Tiger is a fantastic addition to the DCUC line. I’m not sure how he managed to secure a spot in the series, but I’m very glad he did.

Bronze Tiger is rich with accessories and pack-ins. For starters, he has an additional head so that he can be displayed either in his classic Tiger Mask or, for Suicide Squad fans, his unmasked Ben Turner version. Both of these headsculpts are very well done – the tiger mask head is beautifully sculpted. In addition, Bronze Tiger comes with two weapons – a staff and a sword. He can hold both of these easily – not something that can be taken for granted with the DCUC figures. All of these factors combine to make Bronze Tiger the figure of the wave for me.

On the other end, Captain Boomerang represents one of the biggest missed opportunities of the line to date. A classic Digger Harkness would have complimented Bronze Tiger beautifully and added both to the classic gallery of Flash Rogues and the Suicide Squad collection. Instead, we’re given the Brightest Day Captain Boomerang, with a limited number of appearances and little relevance to anyone but Geoff Johns. Le sigh!

For what it is, this is a fine figure. The headsculpt is captures Digger’s Brightest Day look quite well, and his trenchcoat and scarf are very nicely sculpted. He comes with one boomerang accessory which isn’t very sturdy, in fact mine bent getting it out of the packaging, making Captain Boomerang a little less deadly. Here’s hoping that a classic version is still a possibility - it would make a great addition to the Club Infinite Earths Subscription!

Now on to the Super Friends related figures, and I have to say each one of these is a real treat. Toyman is my favourite of the bunch. This partly because the character has the longest comic book pedigree of the bunch, and partly because I really most aspect of this piece. His headsculpt is excellent and spot-on for the look that they were trying to capture. The one thing I would have like to have seen done differently would have been the use of a slightly thinner buck - perhaps Deadman style - Toyman was never this buff!

Toyman comes with some great accessories - a large spinning top which he can hold on a short flexible handle, and an oversized yo-yo with working string. I haven’t had much luck posing him with the yo-yo without the figure being on a stand, as its weight and his rather weak ankle joints combine to pull him over. I normally don’t like giving up display space for stands, but these accessories are worth it. A great touch!

Moving on to the second half of the assortment, we’re now looking at the set of characters that were created specifically by Hanna-Barbera for the Super Friends cartoon. Black Vulcan is a representation of what might have been had the powers that be been prepared to foot the bill for the use of Black Lightning in Super Friends. As well as being an established comic book character, Black Lightning had another big advantage on this guy - long pants. Black Vulcan actually had long pants at one point in the SF cartoon, but generally appeared in the black speedos we see him wearing in the DCUC version.

Fashion choices aside, this is a fine figure, but the headsculpt isn’t 100%. As well as having a really bland facial expression, the “wings” on the side of his head are on the large side - and let’s face it - the poor guy doesn’t need any help looking silly. The one thing I do really like about this figure is the lightning blasts that snap on to his wrist. Hasbro has made good use of these sort of constructs in its Marvel Universe line, and I’d love to see Mattel use more of these in the future.

Samurai is probably the best known of this particular group of characters, thanks to his rather inexplicable inclusion in Kenner’s Super Powers Toy line from back in my childhood. I have to admit, when I picked up this version, I was a tad disappointed that he didn’t have his “Power Action Gale Force Spin!”

This figure is a very faithful rendition of what all remember and either love or loathe about Samurai. His vest is nicely sculpted, with little creases to add detail. He also has a sword as an accessory. His headsculpt is very well done - the best of all of the Super Friends characters.

El Dorado may have had the least amount of screen time of this set of Super Friends characters, but at least he got pants. Of course, he had to give up his shirt to get them, but hey, them’s the breaks in the '70s token interracial superhero game. This particular character rates the lowest in my personal care factor stakes, but for what he is, he’s well done. His belt and harness is a separate piece with nice detail, and it’s clearly where most of the tooling went for this figure, since his gloves are just painted on.

The Collect and Connect figure for this wave is Apache Chief, the last of the Super Friends characters. While this uses the standard CnC buck, it has some nice custom elements that work to good effect. His headsculpt is excellent, and the sculpted stitching on his vest and loincloth is a very nice touch, and his boots are also very nicely detailed. This completes the Super Friends set, and hopefully has scratched this particular itch for Mattel so that we can move on to other groups of characters.

There aren’t many more waves of DCUC left to review before we move to different retail distribution and Club Infinite Earths. While these figures meet some sentimental needs for some collectors, we are still waiting for this line to fulfil its promise in terms of delivering the world of characters we’d hoped for. For me, the Super Friends characters aren’t what I had in mind when I imagined where the line would go. I’m going to enjoy these figures, but they don’t make the collection feel complete by any means. Here’s hoping!

Club Infinite Earths Lives - and so does Metron!

Fangirl 2.0 has made the much anticipated announcement on the future of Club Infinite Earths, the DC Universe Classics Subscription Program, at Matty's Facebook Page:

Hi DC Universe Club Infinite Earths fans!

We have some good news...the 2012 DC Universe Club Infinite Earths subscription program is moving forward!  As you know, we did not hit the number of subscribers we were seeking for the club, but we know that there are some very passionate DC Universe fans, so we found a way to make the program work.

Current subscribers will get 6" and oversized figures according to the schedule that was originally communicated at San Diego Comic Con and online.  All figures that have been revealed will be part of the subscription program.

In order to make the program work, we needed to raise prices for day-of sales.  So if you are NOT a subscriber, you will be paying more for the figures on the day of the sale.  The good news for subscribers is that you are locked in at the subscription rates previously advertised.

And the even better news is that we are exploring re-opening the subscription program for a limited window of time.  We've heard fans online posting that they wish that they had subscribed, so now you'll get that chance.  Be on the lookout for more details and dates next week.

We still have more good news, we are excited to reveal the winning club exclusive figure...Metron!  So all of the subscribers will get their very own Metron, along with his Mobius Chair!

All of this good news will hopefully mean a fabulous start to the weekend for all of the DC Universe fans!

-FanGirl 2.0  :)"

I am surprised by how excited I am by this news. Having Metron and the Mobius Chair confirmed is a dream come true for Kirby and New Gods fans, and I am really expecting the Four Horsemen to knock the Mobius Chair out of the park!

As stated above, the subscription is going to be re-opened for order for a short period of time, so if you're late to the party there is going to be another chance!

What a great start to the day!

Time is running out! Give Club Infinite Earths a chance!

This is just a final plug to encourage fans of DC Comics characters and related toys to consider signing up for the Club Infinite Earths DC Universe Classic Subscription and save the DCUC line

There are many valid reservations and criticisms of the approach Mattel has taken to this project. I've read them all and I understand them. Could the  selection of figures currently announced be better, especially for classic comics fans? Yes. Is it a big ask to sign up without knowing what direction the line is going to take? Yes. Could the whole thing have been handled better? Certainly.

For me, though, it comes down to this: I love the DC Universe. I love the glimpses that Mattel has given us into toy versions of the classic DC Universe, and Mattel has made it clear that if we want that to continue, Club Infinite Earths is the way to do it. Obviously this would be an easier pill to swallow if we knew that characters to complete the Doom Patrol and Metal Man were on the way, but we have been told that if we want these characters, this is the only way we'll see them.

I am prepared to put some faith in the Four Horseman and take a punt on this line. Masters of the Universe fans will know the nooks and crannies of the MOTU Universe that Club Eternia has allowed Mattel to explore, and the DCU is such a bigger world - the possibilities are endless!

One of the silliest arguments I have heard against the sub is along the lines of "DCUC won't go away forever. There will always be DC Action Figure lines." Sure, but if DCUC dies, do we really expect to see characters like Mento or Platinum in the first waves of whatever ultimately takes it's place? I don't think so. DCUC remains the best chance to see these characters come to life and finally complete these teams.

There are plenty of great articles out there with examples of what we could see and why the sub needs to go ahead - click here for a great article from VeeBee at the Fwoosh as an example.

The sign up closes very soon depending on your time zone. Click here to buy your subscription and give Mattel and the Four Horsemen a chance to run wild with the DC Universe!

Have you signed up? Have something to say? Comment on this post to enter the August AFB Comment of the Month Contest!

Mattycollector Update: All 2012 Subs ship together!

In a pretty clear an attempt to try to get Club Infinite Earths over the line, Mattel has announced that from Feb 2012 all subs will ship together, which means that you can add Club Infinite Earths *or* any other sub now and get combined shipping.

While it seems like this would have been common sense practice anyway, it's definitely good news! I had to make two separate orders due to a website glitch when the subscriptions first opened and exchanged several futile emails with Digital River trying to get them combined. While it would have been nice to have been saved all of that frustration, it's great to see a good outcome come about.

Here's the full text of Mattel's announcement, and you can check out all the details here at Mattycollector.com

The time's never been better to get on board Club Infinite Earths and save DC Universe Classics!

"Toy Fans,
We heard your requests loud and clear, and we have BIG news! We've just confirmed that all 2012 subscriptions will ship together, regardless of when they were ordered, as long as they are for the same customer ID number and going to the same address!
There is one important caveat: the first month that any of your subscription orders ship, subscriptions not purchased together will not ship together (estimated January for Club Eternia®, March for Club Ecto-1 and Club Lion Force, and April for DC Universe Club Infinite Earths*). The second time your subscription ships (essentially the monthly renewal), all of your subscriptions will ship together to the same address (estimated February for Club Eternia, April for Club Ecto-1, May for Club Lion Force and DC Universe Club Infinite Earths). This only applies to subscriptions that were not purchased together. All subscriptions that are purchased in the same transaction will ship together the first month as promised.
Even better, if we go forward with the add-on subscription for MOTUC 30th anniversary figures we’ve previously mentioned, the combined shipping will apply to that as well! That means any club subscriptions you order at any time before 8/22 will ship together and if you purchase the possible MOTUC 30th anniversary subscription, those figures will ship right along with your club subscriptions. We should be able to confirm this subscription at Power-Con™ next month!
So where does that leave us for 2012? Let's see… MOTUC Club Eternia® has Shadow Weaver, our very first Filmation character, and we're celebrating the 30th anniversary all year long. Ghostbusters™ Club Ecto-1 has the first-ever, fan-demanded Dana. With Voltron® Club Lion Force, you get the 5 lions you need to build the epic-scale 23" Voltron. AndDC Universe Club Infinite Earths features true collector figures you won't find at retail and, for the first time, we're letting fans choose the club-exclusive figure -- which, by the way, will be oversized!
With truly amazing lineups for every club and combined shipping for all subscriptions no matter when they're ordered, the 2012 subscriptions will deliver everything serious collectors could ask for and more. So don't wait – the sale ends Monday, August 22nd at 11:59 p.m. PT so click here to order today!
