Google Pixel 9 is Coming, and It Could Be the Next Big Thing

With Google revealing sneak peeks of some Pixel 9 phone models ahead of the Made by Google event on August 13, 2024 (August 14 AEST), the excitement is now through the roof for Google’s latest Pixel phone lineup! Did they finally crack the code on the screen crease? Will it have advanced AI features? Everyone has their own questions and speculations.

At JB, we’re just as excited as you are! So, while counting down the days for the official reveal, we’ve dug into every leak, every blurry photo, and Google’s own sneak peeks to see what these new phones could bring. Here’s what the rumours are saying.

A First Look at the New Pixel Phones

Google's recent teaser on its website has sent waves of excitement across the tech community. Just a glimpse of these new phones, and we're already piecing together the puzzle of what could be next.

First off, the new Pixel phones will most likely be called Google Pixel 9 since Google’s teaser kind of made it very obvious. The biggest surprise, however, is the design! The teaser image shows a phone with a flat back, a bold departure from the curved edges of the Google Pixel 8. Is this a new era of sleek, boxy design for Google? And what’s up with the matte finish?

The camera bar looks totally revamped, too – triple lenses on a raised island hint at a serious rear camera upgrade. Maybe we'll finally see Google compete with the megapixel monsters from other brands?

And then there's the whole "built for the Gemini era" tagline. Does this cryptic message hint at even more powerful AI integration?

Of course, this sneak peek just fuels the rumours. Is the standard Pixel 9 getting a smaller screen size? Will they be available in new colours? And what exactly is the deal with the Pixel 9 Pro Fold? Is Google finally ready to take on Samsung in the foldable phone game?

While Google is still keeping all the major details under wraps, this first look tells us their new lineup could be a game-changer.

Rumoured Google Pixel 9 Upgrades that Could Change the Game

With rumours and leaks pointing to top-tier specs and cutting-edge innovations, the new Pixel phones have everyone on the edge of their seats. Here’s the latest scoop on what the Google Pixel 9 might bring to the table:

Multiple Models

Every iteration of Google’s Pixel series usually launches with two models. But this year, leaks suggest they’ll be upping the game. They’ve already revealed a foldable Pixel 9 Pro Fold. But published images from Taiwan’s National Telecommunications Commission show two more models: a standard 6-inch phone and a significantly larger model. The rumour mill hints that these could be named Google Pixel 9 and Google Pixel 9 Pro XL.

Advanced Processor

Benchmark scores released by the Russian website Rozetked have been hinting that the Pixel 9 phones will be powered by the next generation of Tensor processor, which if they keep the same naming convention we expect to be called the Tensor G4. This could mean faster processing speeds, enhanced AI capabilities, and improved energy efficiency, even with graphics-intensive games and apps.

Revamped Camera

While the jury's out on a major sensor upgrade, Android Authority claims that a source inside Google leaked that some Pixel 9 models might boast a fancy variable aperture main lens, letting it adjust to any lighting situation like a champ. And all models could get a bump in ultrawide sensor resolution. Pixel photography is already legendary, but this could be next-level.

Sharper Display

As per an article by the Korean news site ET News, the new Google phones could feature Samsung’s newest M14 OLED screens. This could mean brighter displays and a buttery smooth 120Hz refresh rate. While the Pixel 9’s screen could be slightly smaller than the Google Pixel 8a at 6.03 inches, the higher refresh rate could offer a more immersive viewing experience.

Enhanced Charging and Battery Life

Taiwan’s NTC report also points to a bump in charging capabilities, with the Pixel 9 Pro XL potentially supporting up to 30W. This could mean less time tethered to your charger and more time on the go.

Android 15 Integration

Ready out of the box with Android 15, the Pixel 9 series could bring new connectivity features and a refined user interface, setting a new standard for Android phones.

Foldable Champs

Last year’s Pixel Fold was a hit, but the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold promises even more. Leaked images from Taiwan’s NTC and Google’s sneak peek suggest slimmer bezels and a more compact form when folded, making it more pocket-friendly.

Could the Google Pixel 9 Camera Set New Standards?

While it’s not yet clear if the new Pixel camera setup could rival that of the iconic iPhone Pro Max cameras or the Galaxy S24 Ultra, the website Android Authority claims that a source inside Google itself hints at a monster upgrade! We're talking all-new ultrawide and telephoto sensors, packing a whopping 50 megapixels each! That's insane detail for mobile photography.

And wait, there's more! The same source also suggests that the selfie game is about to get real with a possible 50-megapixel front camera on the Pro XL. This could mean capturing crystal-clear group selfies or vlogs that look impossibly sharp!

With Google hinting at Gemini integration, speculations also point at more intuitive camera features. Think smarter AI, quicker autofocus, and features that could make every shot Instagram-worthy.

Gemini Will Most Likely Be on the Table

The Pixel 8 Pro already runs the full-fledged Gemini Nano model, and with Google teasing Gemini integration in its sneak peek, it’s most likely that the latest Pixel phones will feature advanced AI features.

Google's still mum on specifics, but rumours hint at a deep dive into on-device AI. We’re talking about blazing-fast processing speeds and even sharper system intelligence. Could Gemini revolutionise how the Pixel 9 handles daily tasks? It’s a thrilling thought!

And consider the impact on the Pixel's stellar camera capabilities. With Gemini’s AI enhancements, we might see features that automatically perfect your shots, making every photo seem professionally taken.

Mark Your Calendars for August 13th!

Mark your calendars because Google is expected to drop the Pixel 9 at a special Made by Google event on August 13, 2024, at 10 AM (August 14, 3 AM AEST). Yes, it’s happening way earlier than Google’s usual October launch, and it’s going to be livestreamed from the Google HQ in California!

If past launches are any indication, we might also see a new generation of Google Pixel watches and Pixel Buds. There’s no official word yet on when these devices will be available for pre-order, but based on past launches, we can speculate that they will be available on the same day or very shortly thereafter.

While everything is yet to be confirmed, one thing is certain: if all these rumours prove true, this could be the year Pixel phones truly go toe-to-toe with the biggest names in mobile.
