Marge Gunderson (Fargo) - Halloween 2018

This was the easiest Halloween costume I've ever come up with. Honestly, I feel guilty even calling it cosplay since all I did was buy the sheriff shirt at *gasp* Party City. Everything else, down to the Disneyland 'sheriff' pin with my name and Mickey Mouse on it, I already owned. (Though I admit, I saved that hat from a donation pile knowing I'd want to cosplay Marge if I ever was pregnant during Halloween.) I knew I didn't want to dress up as an inanimate object, using my belly bump as a mere prop. I wanted to be a pregnant character and Marge is easily my favorite. She's just so great and her and her and husband Norm are one of my favorite movie couples of all time.

Halloween night was a kickball night, so the jacket was perfect for an evening on the field. (I don't play, I just watch and socialize.) Jim wore his classic Team Zessu costume and I had hot cocoa in my coffee cup prop. It wasn't cold enough for the mittens, and honestly, the hat was pretty annoying. Overall it was a great Halloween, and I can't wait till next year when I'll have a little baby to dress up!

Jareth the Goblin King (Labyrinth) - Halloween 2017

I can't believe it's taken me this long to dress up as Jareth, the Goblin King from my favorite movie of all time, Labyrinth. It's been a long time coming and I'm actually pretty happy with the result despite the 'pieced together' nature of this costume. That's right, I did zero sewing this Halloween. (Well, only if you don't count sewing the stoplight patch on my husband's Team Zissou hat...) It all started with the replica necklace. I got that back in 2007 at San Diego Comic-Con, an officially limited-edition treasure. Then the rest was found in my closet or purchased. If you're a fan then you'll recognize this as his 'Dance Magic Dance' look. (AKA, the fastest and easiest Jareth look.) Also, someone at our Halloween party told me I have David Bowie-like features to my face which help sell the look. I don't know about that, but I am pretty proud of the makeup job I did. (I tried countoring on a non-Cats look!) I'd love to hear your thoughts on my costume in the comments below. Happy Halloween! MEOWexander Hamilton (Cats + Hamilton) - BroadwayCon 2017

"Pardon me, are you Aaron Purrr sirrr?"
The idea came to me during the bus ride to the first BroadwayCon in 2016. I was scrolling through Twitter on my phone when I found out Cats was coming back to Broadway that summer. It was beyond perfect timing! That year one of my cosplays was the Jellicle kitten, Jemima. I think Lin-Manuel Miranda tweeted congratulations of some sort and the hashtag #cats4ham (a play on the hashtag #ham4ham) started to appear. I immediately joked that I should make a Cats/Hamilton crossover cosplay for next year. Welp...jokes on me 'cause I did it!

The costume I chose was Hamilton's opening look since it's brown and off-white. (Good cat colors and I already have my brown and cream arm warmers I made years ago.) Making the costume was a bit experimentation and a lot of patterned sewing. Most of the clothing was from a pattern but I did construct the cravat without a pattern, just looking at photos of Lin-Manuel in the show. I knitted myself some brown and black leg warmers to mimic his boots and a (slightly hidden) tail to match. The wig was the most experimental part, Jellicle cat in the front, Patriot ponytail in the back.

I'll be doing another post about the makeup but I do want to mention the glasses. I realize Hamilton does not wear glasses till the second act but I would have needed to wear glasses anyways...hence the in-character prescription glasses. They really came in handy since I wore this costume 4 days in a row. First for only an evening (to see Cats...video of how that went here) and then for all 3 days of BroadwayCon (Review of day one, two, and three.)

The entire week was beyond amazing, I made some new friends and everyone seemed to really get a kick out of my costume! MEOWexander Hamilton was a success!

BroadwayCon 2017 Cosplay Sneak Peek! - WIP Wednseday

I leave tomorrow on a bus to NYC for the second annual BroadwayCon. I've kept my costume, for the most part, a secret. It's a crossover costume of my two favorite musicals, and it's a pun. Feel free to guess, the costume will be revealed tomorrow when I wear it to see CATS! (4th-row orchestra aisle seat!!!) Follow me on Instagram to catch that reveal.

Anyways, please enjoy a few work-in-progress shots (minus makeup) of my costume. Huge shout-out to my mom for sewing all the buttons on by hand. I love you mom!

See you at BroadwayCon if you're going. If not, you can look forward to so many photos, video, etc. in the next few weeks! Meow!

Shilo (Repo The Genetic Opera) - Halloween 2016

Six years ago I dressed up as Shilo from Repo! The Genetic Opera for Halloween. It was her ending song outfit, covered in blood, I was just missing the gun. This year for Halloween I'm dressed as Shilo yet again in her opening number outfit, from the song 21st Century Cure.  I had been saving items from way wardrobe to put this together for years and forgot all about it. When I moved I found it all and now I’ve finally finished it. Here are some more photos and a video of how I made it at the bottom of the post.

BroadwayCon NYC 2016 - Day Three - Sunday

Broadway Con 2016 SundayBroadway Con 2016 Sunday BroadwayCon day three was great! These first two photos were Instagram posts from that Sunday, and yes, I was Jemima again. There's more info on why in this post. (Main stage cosplay stuff) The second costume is Veronica Sawyer from the Heathers musical, full costume pics are here. So after the morning main stage and I changed into Veronica, I spent a lot of the day doing what I did not have the time to do the first two days, just walk around. It was an easy day, I browsed the vendor hall and got a few goodies, met some cool people, and got to see another show!

Veronica Sawyer (Heathers musical) - BroadwayCon 2016

For the last day of BroadwayCon I decided I was going as Veronica Sawyer from the musical version of the 80s film, Heathers, by Laurence O'Keefe. (He also did the Legally Blond musical.) The costume was mostly a 'fond items' cosplay. Tights and socks were bought. The shirt, shoes, and skirt I had. (that skirt is so old, it's from my first ever cosplay, Raye Hino from Sailor Moon, which was 16 years ago!) The buttons bought and painted and the brooch was made with pens, sticker paper, brooch pin back, and cardboard. Oh, and the necklace is really my glasses, hidden for photos. Super quick, supper fun. (and I met the creator in costume!) My cousin Dianna went as Heather Chandler (perfect for her) and together we had a blast!

Jemima (Cats) - BroadwayCon 2016

IMG_8104 This costume was a long time coming, I wanted to make a 'proper' Jemima costume for years and with the new BroadwayCon happening, I finally had a real deadline. I sewed the unitard myself after painting the pieces with fabric paint. The shoulder fluffies are frayed organza. The wig is made of kanekalon hot glued onto a wig cap made out of control top pantyhose.  The leg warmers I knitted and the tail is made from yarn that I wrapped together.  The gloves are store bought and painted and the shoes are my old jazz shoes from over 10 years ago. I wore her twice at BroadwayCon and that's it so far. I'm really proud.

Cats WIP - MagicCatJenny vs Cats Costuming Part 2

Jemima - CATS
I'm making a CATS costume again! Oh Everlasting, please let this work! Okay, so the Jemima costume I started and stopped about twice about 5 years ago is getting resurrected yet again. However, I have a real deadline now (Broadway Con in January) so progress is actually being made. I'm doing the Video/London style of the character Jemima, with a bit freestyle as well.

Half-Way Jellicle - Halloween 2015

IMG_7819

This Halloween was my first after moving to Maryland, so I did not have any old costumes with me nor did I have the funds to make an entirely new costume. I've been working on a new CATS costume for Broadway Con so I decided to use finished elements of that and my vintage CATS sweater to create a 'half-way Jellicle' costume. So 80s!

MagicCatJenny vs. Cats Costuming

I am quite possibly getting back into the world of Cats costuming and I don't know what I'm doing. It's been 13 years since I made my last Cast costume and I've fallen out of touch with a lot of my old friends from the Cat fan community. So why am I even considering it? I'm going to Broadway Con in January and this might be my last chance to be a Jellicle at a convention where it make sense. I've talked out my frustration and the pros and cons in this video:

My Cosplay and Costume History

Happy Halloween month! Things have been a bit slow here and there are reasons, but before I get into them I have a new video to share. It's: My Cosplay and Costume History When I started my YouTube channel I had planned to talk about costume making and cosplay a lot more than I ended up actually doing. So as inspiration to myself and to catch up my audience, I went through...all of them! If you'd like to see more photos and read about the process and experience of each costume, I have them all listed here. I'm not sure if this Halloween I have time or money to really make something really great but I am planning on making a few costumes for Broadway Con in January. (I really need to get working on those asap!!) I hope you enjoy the video and let me know which costume was your favorite!

An Excellent Time at the Renaissance Fair

RenFair April 2015 Last weekend I went to the Renaissance Fair with some friends. It was time travelers weekend and I don't own a suit (or a bow tie) so I went as Ted Theodore Logan from Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. (My friend Vince went as Bill.) We had a lot of fun taking photos with other fellow time travelers and a few just 'favorite characters' as well. Enjoy the photos!

There was also Gandalf and Jareth...so I had to take photos with them. RenFair April 2015 RenFair April 2015
