Recent flowers of the month from OWHH Millinery

Hiya pickles!

I haven't blogged about my last 4 hair flowers from Off With Her Head Millinery. I have a 12 month subscription to the hair flower of the month club. I love the suspense in not knowing what I'm going to get every time, and because I'm forgetful when they turn up each month it's a lovely surprise.

Close up shots (and hair flowers mostly the right way up).

This month's flower is the one with the skull on it, in honour of last week's Talk Like A Pirate Day. Next month's flower is Halloween themed and I cannot wait to receive it! I LOVE Halloween.

Tartan dress version 2.0

Happy Monday pickles!

I decided to restyle the tartan dress from Simply Be I wore a couple of weeks ago to make it a bit more me. This cardigan is a few years old and always comes out at this time of year.

Imitating eagle eyes action man

I prefer the length of the dress as it is here, unbelted - using a belt in my previous post with this dress made it a bit too short. The lipstick I'm wearing here is a Makeup Revolution lip velvet in shade Depravity. I did swatches here.

How was your weekend? Mine was a sleepy one. I slept 16 hours Saturday till Sunday when lady time and a migraine hit me at once. We went out for a short walk both days though as I need to get as much daylight in as possible at this time of year to keep S.A.D. at bay.

What did you do?

Chronic illness and consistency

Hello pickles,

One of the most annoying things about chronic illness for me is the lack of consistency it brings to my life. I feel better in myself when I eat well and take gentle exercise, but there are vast periods of time when that just isn't possible.

Generic past 'healthy' meal photo for the purposes of having a photo in this blog entry.

It's ironic that when I need nutrients most of all, I'm least likely to be able to take care of myself. I've just come out of a couple of months where I haven't juiced anything at all, and have basically lived off of pre-packaged salads and other quick fixes. About a week ago, despite feeling like hell I decided I was going to start cooking again and make a concerted effort to cram in as much fruit and veg as possible, as well as drinking plenty of water.

I'm not looking for 'good fatty' approval, nor am I here to moralise about food choices. When I eat lots of fruit and veg I have more energy, I sleep better, my IBS is less problematic and I feel slightly better in myself.

As much as I'm tempted to all gung ho and promise myself this is the new me, I know at some point through choice or necessity I'm going to overdo it physically again (or have a mental health slump) and then I'll be thrown into months of not being able to take care of myself properly again. Last time my family stayed with us I took loads of exercise, and I felt bloody fantastic for a couple of days afterwards. And then the fatigue set in - not sleeping properly even though I'm exhausted, getting up and feeling the need to sit down as soon as I've cleaned my teeth as it has wiped me out. Going hungry as I don't have the energy to eat, and when I do having some pre-packaged shit or a sandwich. Not cooking anything beyond the occasional bacon sandwich for weeks on end, and feeling shit about it.

So what to do? What is there to do?! I can fight against it, making myself even more ill through stress, or I can try to accept there are times when it's too hard to take good care of myself. The thing is that when I feel so low and devoid of energy, it's beyond me to think about rustling up a quick omelette or beans on toast. EVERYTHING feels like too much effort. I simply can't brain looking after myself. The fatigue is all-encompassing, mentally and physically, and it's hard to explain to those who are well. I can best describe it as feeling as if you are under siege.

By far the most annoying thing for me about Fibromyalgia and CFS/ME is never feeling I can to do enough to make a difference. I can only take care of myself when things are going well, and that's not very often.

Gentle hugs to my fellow spoonies battling to do what's right for you but not having the spoons to do it.

Chunky Cat Cuddler cat necklace

Hiya loves,

When I was at Plus North I had the chance to see Nicola from Chunky Cat Cuddler's wares close up and I fell in love with a black cat necklace. I didn't have any money at the time so I bought it when I came home.

It's a double layered piece, and the gold layer underneath is mirror acrylic. It's a really substantial piece with chunky fixings. I love chunky chains and clasps as Fibromyalgia makes it hard to have my arms behind my head. Bigger clasps = less time fiddling and less pain.

I have a new strategy about spending money and that is TRY to buy one quality item of jewellery a month and one quality item of clothing. Quality over quantity, and hopefully less fast fashion and more stand out pieces. Wish me luck!

Mesothelioma Awareness Day

Hiya loves,

Today is the 10th Mesothelioma Awareness Day. I'm writing about it because a lady called Heather contacted me to help me raise awareness. I agreed because one of my ex-colleagues lost his father very suddenly to mesothelioma so I know how it destroys lives.

My name is Heather Von St. James and I am reaching out to you in hopes that you will help me with a cause that is very near and dear to my heart.

Eight years ago, I was diagnosed with mesothelioma; a rare and preventable cancer caused only by exposure to asbestos. I had just given birth to my daughter and I was given 15 months to live. After a life saving surgery that included the removal of my left lung, I have made it my life's mission to spread awareness about mesothelioma and the dangers of asbestos.

September 26th, 2014 marks the 10th anniversary of Mesothelioma Awareness Day, and has been the driving force behind the movement to bring more attention and funding to this cancer. There is no more innocent victim than a person with mesothelioma, they are sick as a direct result of a product that is NOT banned in the U.S. This disease has a life expectancy of just 18 months after diagnosis, and symptoms may not be evident until 20-35 years after initial exposure to asbestos.

From Wiki: Mesothelioma (or, more precisely, malignant mesothelioma) is a rare form of cancer that develops from cells of the mesothelium, the protective lining that covers many of the internal organs of the body. Mesothelioma is most commonly caused by exposure to asbestos. The most common anatomical site for mesothelioma is the pleura (the outer lining of the lungs and internal chest wall), but it can also arise in the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity), the pericardium (the sac that surrounds the heart),[2] or the tunica vaginalis (a sac that surrounds the testis).

Most people who develop mesothelioma have worked in jobs where they inhaled or ingested asbestos fibers, or were exposed to airborne asbestos dust and fibers in other ways. Working with asbestos is the major risk factor for mesothelioma.

I was hoping to get together with my friend to talk to him about his father's life and death but circumstances didn't allow. Perhaps if we do so at a later date I can do a follow up post with his story.

Asbestos is a set of six naturally occurring silicate minerals[1] which all have in common their thin fibrous crystals. They are commonly known by their colors, as "blue asbestos", "brown asbestos", "white asbestos", and so on. Asbestos mining began more than 4,000 years ago, but did not start large-scale until the end of the 19th century when manufacturers and builders used asbestos because of its desirable physical properties:[1] sound absorption, average tensile strength, its resistance to fire, heat, electrical and chemical damage, and affordability. It was used in such applications as electrical insulation for hotplate wiring and in building insulation.

In the UK use of Chrysotile asbestos was banned at the end of 1999. Brown and blue asbestos was banned in the UK around 1985. Buildings built or renovated prior to these dates may contain asbestos materials. Due to the amount of time it takes for mesothelioma to make itself known it's likely that there are many victims who haven't yet been diagnosed.

You can read more about Heather's story here.

Thanks for reading. Has mesothelioma affected your family?

Makeup Revolution Goddess of Love highlighter

Hiya pickles!

My name is Leah I'm addicted to luminosity. If my face isn't as sparkly as the Vegas strip at night I don't feel right. When I saw the Makeup Revolution Goddess of Love highlighter it looked just like my cup of tea. The highlighter is part of MR's 'sister range' I Heart Makeup, which has a lot of fun products.

Makeup Revolution Goddess of Love highlighter
 Look at it!

Makeup Revolution Goddess of Love highlighter

It's quite subtle on my face. It looks like a natural sheen, and applied in places where your face would naturally catch the light - on top of your cheek bones, down the length of your nose, above your top lip etc - it will give a youthful glow. One of the things which happens as we age is we slowly start to lose a bit of our shine, and products like this help fake it. Since we're heading into Autumn/Winter in the UK and will be soon deprived of sunlight, the importance of a bit of shine is even more important. Of course there are other ways to get a bit of a glow - sex, a brisk walk on a cold day, and other exercise. Getting a sweat on is a great way to give your skin a boost, but so is putting it on with a brush!

Goddess of Love is £4.99 from Makeup Revolution online and in larger Superdrug stores.

Do you like to fake your glow? Or are you a hot yoga kind of glow-getter?

Plus Size fashion news

Hello you!

Something I haven't really covered at all in the past is new plus size collections, which I will be trying to keep up with in future. There are a few new things in plus size land which I'll cover here.

EVANS

Last week Twitter and Facebook reupted in a frenzy of oohs and ahhs over the Evans Design Collective fashion show at London Fashion Week. Evans got together with six designers - Clements Ribeiro, Giles Deacon, Hema Kaul, Jamie Wei Huang, Lulu Liu, and Vita Gottlieb - to put on the first plus size fashion show at LFW evarrrrrrrr. Apparently this moistened gussets from here to New Yawk and back, and I can see why as there are some seriously needful things in the collection.

This collection is firmly out with the nanas, and in with the new kids.

I personally love the sheers, the metallics, the laser cut pretties and the crop tops. I look forward to seeing what prices are going to be like when the collection comes out next February.

SIMPLY BE

Simply Be has recently brought out a couple of collections with limited size ranges. The Kelly Brook range is touted as being up to a size 32, but much of it isn't available in the top sizes - 5 items out of the 13 available are in a size 32. They're also another Look magazine collection which goes up to a size 26. I have been shopping with Simply Be since I knew it existed and for many years it was the only place I could get fashionable clothes at all, but this size elitism doesn't sit well with me. You could say my love of Simply Be has been downgraded to a like. Of course it's excellent for smaller fats, but there's far more choice for smaller people anyway. It's not they who need more choice. Ever decreasing circles. Can you imagine the outcry if they did a range from sizes 26 to 32 and nothing below those sizes? I rest my case.

ASDA

Asda have brought out a small range of clothes up to a size 32. It's cheap and basic but there are a couple of nice things. The blazer I had my eye on has already sold out, which is a good sign. I hope they get it back in stock.

ZELIE FOR SHE

I heard about Zelie for She on Instagram, I think. There are no words.

Photo belongs to Zelie For She

So pretty! This collection is on pre order and you can check out their site here.

That's about all for now. Is talking about news in plus size fashion something you'd like to see from me regularly?

Makeup Revolution vampy lip velvets

Hello you!

MAKEUP REVOLUTION LIP VELVET SWATCHES IN BLACK HEART AND REBEL

MAKEUP REVOLUTION LIP VELVET SWATCHES IN DEPRAVITY AND VAMP
DEPRAVITY TOP
VAMP BOTTOM

As soon as I saw these lip velvets on a blog I was on the Makeup Revolution website like a shot.

Vamp and Black Heart are very similar in colour, in fact I got myself in a pickle when it came to allocating names to the photos. Black Heart is slightly darker and more a deep purple black (but not completely black) whereas Vamp is more a cherry black. I found the two darker colours to be harder to apply than the red and purple shades, quite possibly because I knew if I made a boo-boo, it would be hard to clean up. (I use grapeseed oil on a cotton bud).

The product is a thinner consistency than the MUA velvet lip products, but you still need to work quickly and accurately, which didn't always happen for me as you can see in my close up swatches. It was definitely a case of practice makes perfect. I applied a thin layer of lip balm before each colour to help with glide. I find if the product is still wet you can go in for a second pass to clear up any missed bits, but whatever you do don't put your lips together while it dries or else you'll get glue lip. If you can master the blow up doll mouth you'll have no problems while it dries. Once on I didn't find them particularly drying, but I'm sure the lip balm helped.

As to longevity, on the outer parts of my lips they lasted hours, but not very long on the inner parts of my lips - I drink water constantly as my meds give me a dry mouth.

You can find these lip velvets for £3 each here, and in selected Superdrug stores. My favourite shades are Vamp and Rebel.

5 ways to beat the blogging blues

Hiya pickles!

I was thinking about the times recently when I've needed a rest from blogging due to personal reasons or feeling burned out. Here are a few tips which help me beat the blogging blues.

5 WAYS TO BEAT THE BLOGGING BLUES

  1. TAKE A BREAK. If everything is getting on top of you and blogging feels like a chore rather than a pleasure, take a few days off (or longer if you need it). Do something fun, see your friends and family, or curl up on the sofa with a bunch of DVDs. When you're refreshed your readers will be ready and waiting. I felt enthused about blogging again after my mini-breaks a month or so ago and wouldn't hesitate to take one again if I need it.
  2. TALK TO OTHER BLOGGERS. They're in the perfect position to sympathise with you when you feel uncertain about your blog or blogging itself. If you've built up a network of blogger friends on Facebook or Twitter, talk to them and see if they can offer you some perspective. The bloggers I know are fantastically supportive and always there to help.
  3. LOOK THROUGH YOUR ARCHIVE. If you're tired out it's hard to be objective, so you might be beating yourself up about your blog content for no good reason. Blogging is a competitive business, and it's easy to feel like you don't match up to the big hitters. Any time I feel a bit blue I look through my archive and soon start to feel proud of what I've done so far.
  4. REDIRECT. If you're unhappy with your blog, introduce some new features. Ask for guest bloggers, do some Youtube videos or even add a new subject matter to your blog. If you're a fashion blogger with a passion for cake decorating, talk about it. If you're a wordy blogger and want to branch off into beauty, go for it! If readers are really into you they won't care what the hell you talk about.
  5. CHANGE YOUR DESIGN. It can be as simple as changing your profile photo, refreshing your About Me to make sure it's bang up to date, or else take time off to have a complete redesign. Whether you DIY it or pay someone else, a change of scenery can perk you up. If I'm feeling down about my blog, refreshing it a little always cheers me up.
Bloggers, if you get down, what helps you feel better? Blog readers, what makes you subscribe to a blog?

Tartan Terror OOTD

Hello sweet peas,

I bought this dress from Simply Be recently. It was in the sale and I had a further 20% off code. I decided to take photos and then make up my mind as it didn't immediately wow me. I'm having a bad hair day in the photos, by the way.

It's a bit shorter than I'd usually like. What do you think? Should it stay or go?

You might've noticed I've done sitting down photos a couple of times recently. I'm not interested in only showing 'flattering' shots. The way I look sitting down is how a lot of women look sitting down. I'm all for normalising bodies. We see a lot of 'average' bodies in the media, and I think as plus size fashion bloggers the opportunity is there to do a bit of light activism by showing what we look like in all kinds of poses.

Simply Be tartan dress
Leggings from twin-pack Very (one full length, one cropped).
So Fabulous bow ballerinas, Very

The dress is a thin overlay over a black lining. You can see the fineness of the fabric on the arms. It'll be perfect under a thick cocoon-y cardi for winter with some cosy boots.

Both the shoes and the dress in this post were bought with deals. If I get a heads up about discount codes etc would you like me to post about them? And should I keep the dress? It has pockets. :)

**ENDED** Scholl footcare review & GIVEAWAY*

Hi lovelies!

**THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW OVER.**

I was recently sent some items from Scholl to review. Better still they have a set of 3 prizes to give away to one of you lovely people!

I received:

Velvet Smooth Intense Serum
Party Feet Invisible Gel Heel Cushions &
Party Feet Ultra Thin Invisible Gel Cushions

A heads up - there is a photo of a scaly ol' foot in this post, but I needed to test the serum on lizard feet to see what a difference it makes. And does it make a difference! If you're squeamish, head straight to the end of the post.

I've had a skin condition on my right foot for years. I think it's dermatitis. The skin is thick and flaky and needs a lot of care. The photo below is the result of not using my Scholl hard skin remover lately (I purchased it with my own money months ago, review here).

In the before photo there's a build up of flaky skin and dryness. I *had* planned to take 3 photos - one of my au naturel foot, one after using the serum, and then a third after using the hard skin remover AND the serum, but the difference on the au naturel foot after using the serum is so drastic I didn't need a third photo.

That's quite some difference! All I did was apply the serum (about 2 pumps worth) and waited a couple of minutes. I was blown away with the results! It's better than any foot product I've ever used.

The serum is a clear-grey liquid which absorbs really quickly and moisturises fantastically. It uses hyaluronic acid, which helps bring moisture into the skin. It retains moisture more than any other compound and is great in anything to do with face/body/skin care. The serum smells gorgeous - vaguely marine to my nose.

Initially I put the gel cushions in my Evans wedge shoes (pictured above) which was easy. I peeled them off their plastic backing and applied them adhesive side down. I wore a new pair of shoes out on Saturday and decided to unpeel the cushions and put them in those shoes. I've used Scholl gel cushions a long time ago and I think they've improved them because these ones seemed to be a lot more comfortable than I recall. I was totally at ease in my new shoes and there was no rubbing. But of course the real star in the crown of this trio of foot products is the serum, which I will be purchasing when the current one runs out.

Did you also know Scholl also do orthotics? Foot problems run in my family - both my mum and dad have really painful feet so I'd be interested to see if these will help them.

Click through to the giveaway below. It's open until midnight Monday 22nd and is for the UK only as the prizes will be sent directly by Scholl UK's PR. I will pass on the winner's details to the PR for the prizes to be posted. Good luck! Full terms and conditions at the link.

10 Things Tuesday #2 - Pie in the sky wishlist

Howdy!

Today I have a wishlist of epic proportions all to do with blogging. What would make my life easier? Read on!

  1. A professional photographer at my beck and call. James does his best but I don't think he gets my vision sometimes. Like when I dressed up like a gothic witch and stomped around in boots I could barely walk in all for the fashion, daaaaaaaahlink. He just thinks I'm barmy.
  2. Some studio lighting so from October to March when it's darker than David Cameron's heart, people can actually see me in my indoor photos.
  3. A fast glass lens so I can take better shots when it's grim and grey.
  4. A whole room to house my clothes, shoes, bags etc. If not for hubby's drum kit, I could probably have a whole room devoted to my shit, but it keeps him out of mischief. ;) A walk in wardrobe would be amazing.
  5. Since this is a 'pie in the sky' wishlist, how about a big fat wad of money so I can buy lots of pretty dresses to flounce around in?
  6. A huge dressing table (and a well-lit room big enough to put it in) so I can do my make up in style.
  7. Someone to launder and hang up/put away all my discarded outfit pieces.
  8. A flat in London so I can go to allllll the events. (Seriously, I get hacked off with everything being in London and I'm 90 mins away. What about the rest of the UK?!)
  9. A chauffeur to take me to and from said events.
  10. My own personal delivery courier so I stop getting side-eyes from the postman. When he comes up to the door looking like Quasimodo and unfurls a huge bunch of crap for me, I'm pretty sure he hates me.
What would your pie in the sky wishlist have on it? Spill!

Illamasqua Glamore lipstick in Tease

Hello lovelies!

I got this Illamasqua nude Glamore lippie in a beauty box recently. This is my first Illamasqua lipstick.

It looked quite nice on the hand swatch, but it's too pale on my lips, at least with my tanned summer skin. I think in winter it'll look grand, especially with a dark dramatic eye, but right now it's a bit like concealer lips!

I've got the too light lipstick blues :D

The formula is great - long lasting and just a tiny bit drying in exchange for the longevity. It'll make a decent base with a darker colour mixed with it. I can't help but wish this was a dark and vampy colour, but at least I've quenched my curiosity about Illamasqua lippies.

Have you got any lipsticks by Illasmasqua?

I need a lay down now, I've said Illamasqua and lipstick far too many times!

I confess...

Hello fruit bats!

Here's a new post idea where I confess the weird, random and even embarrassing crap that pops into my head.

  1. The smell of overripe bananas makes me heave. Ugh.
  2. I swear alllllll the time at home. Drop something? Yup. Stub my toe. Yupppppp. Hate an advert on the tv? Triple yup. Computer playing up? Holy mudderfuggingshitballsontopofavulva. I'm a potty mouth.
  3. I'm trying to ease into washing my hair just 1-2 times a week, as it's better for your hair (and my henna will last longer) so currently I have about 4 pounds in weight of dry shampoo on my head.
  4. I am obsessive when I find a new tv show or film to watch or a new man to lust over. I'm all about the fandoms, baby! Right now it's Theo James and Divergent. Schaaaaaawing! I've watched it 4 times in the last couple of weeks. Team Sheo. (That's Shailene Woodley and Theo James for the uninitiated).
  5. I liked the Twilight saga and I am unashamed. Team wolf....from the abs down.
  6. However I wouldn't use 50 Shades of Grey to wipe my bottom on.
  7. Half the time my living room looks like a bring and buy sale which got abandoned in a fire alarm. I bring in arm loads of clothes, shoes and accessories to make outfits out of, them forget to use half of them and forget to take them back where they belong. Right now I have a stack of clean folded laundry on the left side of the room to put away, and cast off items to wash or put back on the right.
  8. Even though white bread makes my IBS flare up no end, sometimes there's nothing better than a fish finger sandwich on white bread. Give iiiiiiit to me and no one gets hurt.
  9. If mobile phones lead to cancer, I'm so fucked. And so is everyone else I know. Even my olds are addicted to playing games on their phones.
  10. Everyone wants long eyelashes but they suck. If I had a penny for every time I cleaned my glasses because my eyelashes rub against them I could've had laser eye correction about 10 times over. Wah.
If you feel like getting a confession off of your chest, go at it in the comments.

Have a great weekend.
Leah xoxo

Fat Minnie Mouse feat. Lindy Bop

Hello love birds!

I bought this dress last week and although it's a total bobby dazzler I've sold it to a friend in America as it's too 'special occasion' for me. However, since it was an opportunity to show you how a size 26 Lindy Bop Ophelia fits on my size 28 bod, I gave it a quick spin.

The only downside with this dress being a bit too small for me is the pockets. They pucker up on the sides. If there were no pockets the line would be smoother. But that aside, the 26 is a large one. The fabric is a stiff, heavy cotton with a little stretch. The black section really boosts my boobs, and I actually have no bra on here as I don't have one low cut enough. It's quite supportive, there's just a bit of distance between Pinky & Perky.

I was posing for these photos, doing plenty of booby grabbing, when I turned around and saw two guys on a balcony a few houses away staring at me somewhat intently. Oops.

I do really like this dress, but I've hardly got a manic social life, so it'll just sit in my wardrobe barely getting worn. I might buy another slightly less out there Lindy Bop dress at a later date, because I do love the line. Believe it or not, I'm quite shy and although I'm pretty confident in myself, having my tits out there like an all-you-can-eat buffet is slightly past my personal comfort level most of the time. If strange men make comments about my tits, it makes me want to punch them in the face, so it's best off that I reign them in. :)

Yours Clothing Ashford store opening

Hello lovelies,

Last Friday I went to Ashford to attend the Yours Clothing store opening there. I got there at about 9.40 for opening at 10am and there were hordes of people there already. I met Katt for the first time on the day too, which was great.

The first 50 lucky ladies got a gift bag and a balloon and there were £5 vouchers for the rest of us.

This had to come home with me!

The changing rooms were brightly lit and lovely, with a chandelier on the ceiling as you walk into the area. There are lots of funny slogans on the way and a button to press, which if I recall rightly says 'You're gorgeous!'

It says 'Wow, you look amazing!' (Thanks Sophie for the correction.)
Katt taking photos

Shoes, glorious shoes!

Be mine, my pretties!

Katt spoiled for choice

Owl onesies!

The store is really large and spacious with plenty of room to move around in. The tills were ringing and chinging and there was a fun atmosphere in the shop. The other people in the queue near us were really nice. Katt and I met a lovely couple whose husband had a 'Go for it!' attitude to the wife buying clothes. I wanted to rub his arm to see if it'd rub off on James. ;)

It's the biggest Yours store I've ever been to and since it's only 45 minutes away on the train, it's my closest store. I'm sure I'll be back, but hopefully chauffeured by the mister next time. :)

Yours Ashford is in the County Square shopping centre and sells clothes, shoes, jewellery and accessories. Sizes on the website are 14-32 predominantly with some items up to a size 36, it may differ in store. (I didn't see anything beyond a size 32 in store, but at the same time, I wasn't looking for it either.)

I'll have an outfit post up of me wearing the dress within the next few days.
