England manager Gareth Southgate oversaw yet another penalty shoot-out victory at Euro 2024. All five of England's penalty takers were on target as they eliminated Switzerland in the quarter-finals. But how many penalty shoot-outs have England won? What is Southgate's record as England boss? What is England women's record at major tournaments? And how many penalties has Jordan Pickford saved?

‘I am super pleased’ - Southgate thrilled with England win over Switzerland

England have a long and often troubled relationship with penalty shoot-outs in major international tournaments.
Despite recent successes under Gareth Southgate, England’s men have lost more penalty shoot-outs than they have won.
But after their latest penalty shoot-out win, in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 over Switzerland, have England cracked their spot-kick curse for good?
Here we detail England’s penalty shoot-out record at European Championships, World Cups and everything in between.

How many penalty shoot-outs have England won?

England have won four penalty shoot-outs since their first victory at Euro 1996, when David Seaman denied Miguel Angel Nadal to defeat Spain 4-2 in the quarter-finals.
But fortune would desert The Three Lions for the next five shoot-outs, starting with a 7-6 loss to Germany at Wembley in the last four of Euro 1996.
Southgate famously saw his penalty saved by Andreas Kopke as England suffered heartbreak on home soil.
England have been involved in 11 penalty shoot-outs at international tournaments - four at the World Cup, six at the European Championship and one in the Nations League.

How many penalty shoot-outs have England won under Gareth Southgate?

But as a manager, Southgate has become a spot-kick specialist, winning three out of four shoot-outs since he took charge of the senior side in 2016.
His first came in the 2018 World Cup, when England drew 1-1 with Colombia in the last 16 and neither side could find a breakthrough in extra time.
Eric Dier struck the winning penalty in Moscow that night to end a run of 22 years without a shoot-out victory.
Curiously, half of the shoot-outs England have played under Southgate have come against Switzerland, with the Swiss defeated both times.
Jordan Pickford saved Josip Drmic’s effort to seal third place in the Nations League Finals in 2019, before stopping Manuel Akanji from 12 yards in 2024 to reach the Euro 2024 semi-finals.
Southgate’s only shoot-out defeat came in the final of Euro 2020, when Italy triumphed 4-3 at Wembley after a 1-1 draw.

What is Jordan Pickford’s penalty record for England?

Pickford has saved five out of 20 penalties across four shoot-outs for England, or four out of 14 if you do not include the third-place play-off in the Nations League Finals.
That is more than double all other England goalkeepers have managed between them between 1990 and 2012.

How many penalty shoot-outs have the England women’s team won?

The England women’s football team have won an equal number of penalty shoot-outs as they have lost, with two victories and two defeats.
Their first came in 1984, at the first women’s European Championship, and The Lionesses lost 4-3 to Sweden in the second leg of the final at Kenilworth Road.
And despite 27 years separating their first and second, the result was exactly the same, as England lost 4-3, this time to France in their 2011 Women’s World Cup quarter-final defeat.
But much like England’s men, The Lionesses have turned over a new leaf, winning both of their most recent penalty shoot-outs.
In the 2023 Finalissima against Brazil, England triumphed 4-2 on penalties, Chloe Kelly the woman tasked with netting the winning spot-kick.
And in a weird twist of symmetry, their latest penalty shoot-out win, in the last 16 of the 2023 World Cup versus Nigeria, again ended 4-2 with Kelly the hero once more.
