Update
As we slip back into some of our normal routines and ways of working, it is a pleasure to be writing to you via our academy newsletters once again and celebrating some of the amazing achievements our students have had, in what continue to be, on occasion, difficult times. Across the Trust, we have been able to begin to reintroduce activities and events that had been postponed or cancelled previously. The impact of this and the return to near unrestricted learning has been huge, with students able to begin to enjoy again the wider curriculum and all that it offers.
It is thanks to our amazing staff team that such experiences have been offered. They are an amazing bunch of professionals who are all now ready for a well-earned break; time with their own families and an opportunity to recharge their batteries.
I hope that however you celebrate the pending holiday season, you too get the chance to spend time with those you love and to enjoy a break.
Who knows what the next year will bring, but the one thing I am certain of is that I’m glad that whatever it is, I will be doing it as part of the IET team and with you and your children.

Update
As we near the end of the first term back of the 2021 - 2022 academic year, I would like to thank all of our students for their hard work and positive approach to learning this term. Returning to normality has seen the welcomed freedoms of moving around the academy from classroom to classroom, social interaction across year groups and the return of extra-curricular activities including trips and visits.
It has once again been a busy term and our new e-newsletter provides you with highlights of the many events and experiences children at South Axholme Academy have been involved in since September.
We have also been extremely busy behind the scenes improving the learning environment for our students, including the extension to the dining room area and the refurbishment of toilets within the changing rooms in main block. Work also starts on re-developing the Snax Shack area which we hope to have completed by early March.
As we draw towards the end of the term and indeed the year, I would also like to thank our amazing parents for their support during this term. Your kind words and emails have been welcomed by staff and serve as a reminder to us all of what a wonderful community we serve. From everyone here at South Axholme, we would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
A reminder that staff return on Tuesday 4 January 2022 and students return on Wednesday 5 January. I would ask all parents to continue to support the national effort and continue to complete Lateral Flow Tests during the Christmas period.
All student with consent will be tested on their return on Wednesday.

Academy Update - Teaching and Learning
|

Home Learning - Satchel One
At South Axholme Academy, Home Learning is an essential part of school life as it supports the curriculum, subject interests and develops core skills such as organisation and independent learning.
Research from the Education Endowment Foundation shows that ‘the impact of homework on learning is consistently positive leading to on average five months’ additional progress.’
To help support students, all home learning at South Axhome is set on a platform called Satchel One.
Please encourage your child to download the Satchel One app onto their devices. Students can also access Satchel One via any computer if they are unable to download the app.
If you have not yet got your parent information, so that you can access Satchel One, to support your child at home, please contact the academy.
We thank parents and students for their cooperation whilst we have adjusted to this new way of working.

SAX Loves Reading
This term has seen the launch of our SAX Loves Reading programme. Students across the academy have been given opportunities to demonstrate a love of reading to improve their reading skills, through the various opportunities listed below: -
Students have met an author and received a signed book. We have also seen the introduction to our free to use online library. In form period, students have been given the opportunity of reading weekly with their form tutors and they have also been encouraged to read and research independently at home using our 'High Five' approach. We have been enjoying small group reading sessions, with the more advanced readers taking part in Senior Leadership Team (SLT) book clubs. Mrs Dyer's book club has also been successful and students have been allocated Year 11 Reading Ambassadors during form time to encourage reading together.
It has been fantastic to see the progress made and to witness our young people forming new friendships through shared reading experiences.
A special thank you goes out to our Reading Ambassadors for their support and guidance with their buddy.

European Day of Languages
On 1 October students celebrated the European Day of Languages by designing a cake based on another European country. Students received achievement points and prizes for their creativity. The cakes were then sold in the 'bake sale' and funds raised went towards Macmillan Cancer.

The Senior Student Leadership Team
|
|
Introducing our Senior Student Leadership Team, who were appointed to represent the academy at events such as the Year 6 Open Evening.
In the summer term of Year 10, students had to undergo a rigorous application process. They presented to the whole school (via MS Teams) on the topic of 'why they would be a good leader?' They have already presented to parents and children who visited the academy at the Year 6 Open Evening. More recently they have visited venues for the Year 11 Prom.
I am delighted to say that next year (all being well) the prom will take place at the Garden Hilton Hotel in Doncaster, on Friday 8 July 2022.

Sporting and Other Student Achievements

Student Achievement - Canoeing
Huge congratulations go to Jacob Mockler of Year 8, who has been selected for the British Regional Development Squad for canoe slalom - well done Jacob!

Student Achievement - Cyclocross
Well done to Aaron Cocker in Year 9 who recently attended the National Cyclocross Championships at Penshaw Monument in Sunderland.
Aaron competed in the U14 National Cyclocross Championships which saw people from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales compete against each other in their respective age groups.
Aaron's performance went exceedingly well gaining 6th position against approximately 80 riders of the same age.
Well done Aaron!

Engineering Competition
Well done to Eve, winner of HETA English Skills for Engineers competition.

Scunthorpe Schools' Cross Country
Students took part in the annual cross-country event on 1 December held at the Scunthorpe Schools' Cross-Country Championships, with some great results! Well done to everyone who took part - you definitely showed the South Axholme Mindset.

The English Schools' National Cup
The Year 11 boys' football team made it through to the last 32 teams of the English Schools' National Cup - A fantastic achievement! The team played Hayfield on 25 November and claimed a 4-1 victory. Goals came from Steel, Shillito, Gamet and Coley. Our Year 7 boys also did well and got through to the 5th round of the English Schools' cup after a 3-2 victory vs South Hunsley, on 23 November. Goals came from Moncuit and Smith and Gibb making the result a 3-2 win.

Sponsored Walk
On Friday 8 October, all students in the academy put on their walking shoes and headed off on a 7 mile walk around the local area. This was the 3oth sponsored walk event, and one that we are proud of doing year after year. As well as raising funds for a charity chosen by the Student Leadership Team (Cancer Research UK), it is a perfect opportunity to get out of the classroom and outdoors, to promote a healthy lifestyle. Students certainly showed us their positive South Axholme Mindset #resilience. We managed to raise over £6,000. A massive thank you to all students for their efforts and also to out parents for your continued support.

Children in Need
Thank you to everyone who supported Children in Need. We raised £147.02 - a big thank you to the teachers who were such good sports by taking part in the sponge a teacher and football goal shoot out competition.

Food Bank
Thank you to our parents/carers and student support for contributions to the food bank. We have received a lovely letter from the Trust to express their thanks for our efforts. Thank you to Mr Vickery for collecting the items.

Food Technology
We have seen some fantastic efforts from our Food Technology Department this term. However, the Year 10 Food and Nutrition students definitely deserve a place in our winter newsletter after they decorated their own Christmas cakes - a FANTASTIC EFFORT.

Christmas Preparations
Students have been busy helping to buy and decorate the Christmas tree. They chose it themselves, and watched the process of packing it in readiness for delivery.
Thank you to Holmes and Gardens in Epworth for delivering it to us.
