On returning home from work, there was an unexpected package delivered through my letterbox – it was a pair of green trimmed black leather driving gloves! At this point I had no idea who had sent these – I was just about to ring Vivien to tell her this, when I noticed I had a message on my phone from our dear family friend Malcolm saying 'do they fit.....?' I phoned Malcolm straight away to thank him for my lovely surprise – made my day! 😃

It was wall to wall sunshine all day here. Weirdly fell asleep on the sofa the entire evening, until an insane time, which is why this post is far later than usual!

Headed south to Loch of Hillwell to look for the Bufflehead, but couldn't find it. A message had been put out this morning that it was there, but I hadn't noticed a later message to say is was on Loch of Spiggie, so headed there next. Spent a while scoping the Setter area of the loch and was just about to give up, when I found the Bufflehead with 2 Mallard just east of the layby that overlooks Setter Marsh at around 4.10pm and watched it until the very last throws of light at 4.50pm, along with a lot of Wigeon and Tufted Ducks. Such a tiny little duck! Poor light and not able to get any pictures sadly, but even if I had, it would have been a blurry record shot at that distance.

Beautiful Bouquet of Flowers
From the Physiotherapy Team at GBH

Another birthday surprise! Just after patient handover at work this morning, the Physiotherapy team unexpectedly opened our office door and started singing "Happy Birthday" to me and gave me some beautiful flowers, a huge box of Thorntons chocolates, a lovely scented seasalt candle in a glass and a brilliant card all signed by them. Elaine (Band 7 physio) told me off for not letting them know. WOW! I hadn't expected that at all, so very, very kind of them. Elaine (top baker) stated she would be bringing in cakes in on Monday, so that's the diet put on hold again! Absolutely made my day, thank you all very much indeed! 💖🤗  xxx I will add this to my main birthday post.

After a busy, but successful day at work I returned home (my slightly earlier finish today) and after pulling up into my drive, I looked at my phone and someone had put a message out to say "Unconfirmed report of Orcas at Trondra Bridge at 16.39hrs heading to Scalloway harbour" – this was posted 2 minutes ago! Shot in the door to pick up my binoculars and camera. Drove down the road and turned right to park by the harbour. OMG, there was a massive bull Orca in fading light heading towards Port Arthur and then in a matter of seconds, disappeared out of view behind houses. Drove up the to the end (dead end) of Port Arthur Road and was very kindly invited by a family to stand with them in their garden, to see if we could see them. None of us understood why they had not appeared again. A short while later four Orca's including the large bull Orca, appeared at the furthest point we could see, which I was told is close to where the lighthouse is. Tried to take a picture, but it was blurry shot of a fin, as it was too dark for the camera to focus. WOW! What an end to a brilliant day and thank to the family that let me stand in their garden with them! I realise that I really should start exploring Scalloway more, as the walk through the farm gate towards a lighthouse I didn't even know was there, looks very exciting!

I had an awesome surprise today, four more birthday cards! When I returned home from work there was a long parcel in the shed which said "Prestige Flowers" on the box! Some of my dear and lovely colleagues from my last post at QEH had posted me a bouquet of flowers!!! Thank you so much to Hilary, Bev and Sarah B., I was really taken back, that was an awesome surprise and bought a tear to my eye – hugs and kisses to you all 🤗💞🥰 xxx

I VERY lazily watched Up Helly Aa via the livestream this evening. I went last year and it was fabulous, but I didn't feel up to it this evening. I know its not the same as being there, but it was seriously toasty sitting by my fire, watching the live event on Youtube (see previous post to watch), along with a piece of Margaret's birthday cake! Jill and Rob also let me know about some awesome news. Had a lovely catch up with John F. on the phone and also my dear family friend Malcolm in Heacham and also phoned Hilary to thank her for the flowers and sent a thank you message to Bev and Sarah too. Then phoned Lucy and Vivien to tell them about my extra cards and flowers! Extended birthday! 😊

Tomorrow is a public holiday here in Shetland (only) as the Up Helly Aaa event finishes at 8am tomorrow (yes you did read that correctly). After the big parade and burning of the galley (as seen on the live stream) all the squads perform their 'acts' (prepared months beforehand) at all the halls, where there is a spread of food and all guests are dressed up to the nines as they say and having a 'peerie' drink or too! I decided (with permission from seniors) to work tomorrow, so that I can have an extra day as annual leave when I return to Norfolk in March. I will be on my own, but there is more than enough to do with my regular patients! I need to organise Lucy's birthday presents this weekend at the lastest etc, otherwise they won't arrive on time for 10th February.

Just to give you all a laugh – here in Scotland you get your bus pass at 60 - waiting for it in the post!!! Funny? Not funny! I recall having an amusing conversation in my stroke rehab team at QEH, when Ann-Marie was highly amused, when I firmly stated that '50' was not middle aged. Well I suppose I will have to admit that I'm now middle aged, with the bus pass on route! Ha ha! I guess there must be some advantages to being this old, although apart from the bus pass, I can't think what else?! I had to apply for the bus pass, as you need this to apply for the free vouchers for the ferry. Buses and me don't mix very well with my travel sickness, so won't be using them unless I absolutely have to. Good night!

My 60th Birthday!

Me in the rain and wind at Minn Beach

I don't know how I got to this grand old age so quickly, but I have, so nothing I can do about it. I suppose, as they say 'you are old as you feel' and on a good day I'm still 18 and on a bad day I'm 200! I've not been looking forward to this birthday one tiny bit, but its better than the alternative I suppose! 😆

I have two cards for my birthday from Lucy, Vivien & Ray along with two lovely presents of sheepskin slippers and sheepskin hotwater bottle covers. I had an unexpected and lovely surprise from Interflora on Saturday – a beautiful bouquet of flowers from my sisters & Ray, which arrived at 11am and were put in my shed, I didn't know they were there until late afternoon, as not been feeling too good and didn't get up until very late!

Just after midnight I received an incredible pink birthday card via WhatsApp from John Furse, titled
  Penny 60 & Blooming Fabulous
with his best and longest poem to date! Brilliant and hilarious, as John's verse always is! John also sent an MP3 file too, reading out my poem! It must have taken him AGES to write and to record. A huge thank you John, hugely appreciated and made me smile 🤗😊👏👏👏 xx

Pouring with rain right now and doesn't look a good forecast for my day off and birthday.

🌧 🥳 🌧 😋 🌧 🎉 🌧 🎂 🌧

Woke up later than I intended to. Jumped in shower, washed hair and did quick make-up. Called Lucy, Vivien & Ray to thank them for my lovely presents and cards, Vivien and Ray sang Happy Birthday 🎶 to me! Went to the Cornerstone Cafe in Scalloway and got the last seat by the window – jam packed full of either local people or/and Up Helly Aa visitors. Link on to the  Up Helly Aa website to watch live tomorrow from 7pm. Had a pesto panini, chips, salad and coleslaw, pot of tea and a piece of cake. There were four ladies on a table next to me, who started to sing Happy Birthday to one of them, so I said Happy Birthday too! The cafe owner asked 'was I visiting?' I said 'no, I live here and work at the hospital and am celebrating my 60th birthday' – he replied "I wouldn't have even said you were 50, never mind 60" Obviously said to charm and lift my spirits or/and needs to go to Specsavers! 🤣

Returned home briefly, put the birding gear in the car and headed off for a walk. No news on the Bufflehead, so went somewhere closer to drive to before the light disappeared and headed to Banner Minn. Stopped at Papil Loch – wouldn't that have been a cool birthday tick if the Bufflehead was on here, but alas it wasn't! 4 Whooper Swans, 2 Mute Swans, Teal, Wigeon, Curlew and a Redshank were my birthday birds.
Me in the rain and wind on Minn Beach

Parked up at Papil and walked down to Minn Beach. It was chilly, but refreshing and was raining on and off. Nobody here, no people, no dogs! Loads of sheep feasting on the seaweed on the shore – such a beautiful scene. The sheep were all marked with different colours, some had turquoise bums, some had orange bums and so on! A Great Northern Diver was on the sea – raining too much to get the SLR out of my bag though. Even in the dull light, this beach looks incredible – the turquoise colours of of the crystal waters, rippling over white sands and bubbling through the ribbon seaweed, along with black boulders, pebbles and colourful sheep, makes a spectacular scene. I took far too many pictures! Also tried to take some selfies, which was pretty difficult to achieve with wind and rain!

Minn Beach – a stunning location

I was thinking about Buttons the beach cat (who has her own Facebook page) as I was walking along the beach. Buttons is a gorgeous friendly cat that lives close by (with house and owners!), but in the nicer months prefers to spend most of her time on the beach and greets all visitors who like to fuss her. She has not been seen since for at least 14 weeks and her owner is sadly very worried about her, she is 18 years old – I really hope she is ok, wherever she is.
Margaret's gorgeous birthday cake she so kindly made me!

Returned home, hung all the wet gear up and popped round to Margaret's house (two doors away) for a cup of tea (she had kindly invited me earlier). Margaret invited me to stay for tea, but didn't realise I was 'veggie' and had made chicken curry for her husband Alastair and herself, but she offered me some lentil soup, which was the best lentil soup and warm bread I have ever had! Margaret had gone to the massive effort of making me a birthday cake with 60 and candles on! WOW! Completely unexpected and a wonderful surprise! It was the second cake Margaret had made, as another friend of hers was also 60 today! Candles were lit, we sang and I blew them out – all good fun. Then Alastair returned home from work and enjoyed his curry whilst we chatted and then all had a slice of the birthday carrot cake, which was gorgeous! I can't imagine Margaret making anything that doesn't taste fabulous. Margaret and Alastair also gave me a lovely card. I left around 7pm and walked home, which took around 30 seconds – I had had several missed calls from old friends and my sisters.

Did a Zoom call with Lucy, Vivien and Ray at 7.45pm, which you get free for 40 minutes, although it didn't seem anywhere near that long and seemed to go far too quickly. Lucy looked really well I thought and it was nice to see Vivien and Ray sitting on their little sofa together on the boat.

Called Hilary, as she had tried to call me earlier and she wished me Happy Birthday. Hilary said 'have you had anything from Norfolk?' I had no idea what she was talking about! She then explained that Bev, Sarah B. and herself had posted me something, which obviously had not arrived by today – Hilary had one of her naughty mischevious looks on her face and she roared with laughter when I said 'have you sent me a strippergram?!' This would be my worst nightmare, seriously! I don't know what has been sent, so will await the delivery, thank you all in advance xxx. I think the post is very behind (due to ferry and plane cancellations due to the storm), as Pete S. was shocked his card didn't arrive by today either and he had posted it on Wednesday last week.

Ate more birthday cake, with the fire lit and my new cosy sheepskin slippers on. The day went far better than I had expected and thank you to all those that have made it so special with presents, cards and lovely messages on my blog, 97 messages on Facebook, emails and texts etc.

SHETLAND BIRD NEWS & MORE!

Rare  Bird  Alert  News
Bufflehead ad. drk from 10.39 to 11.18 only, at Setter, Loch of Spiggie.
AMERICAN COOT still between Noss Farm Junction and Setter Marsh at Loch of Spiggie.
American Wigeon 1w. drk at Quendale.
Ross's Goose still, between airfield at Scatsta and Loch of Trondavoe.

A drake Bufflehead, which has been on the Isle of Foula since November, decided to relocate to the Loch of Spiggie this morning and was found by Kevin Kelly – possible due to Storm Éowyn. Unfortunately it only stayed for 39 minutes and flew off towards the Loch of Brow and wasn't re-located again. I headed south (it flew off whilst I was driving) and decided to look at Boddam Voe (every birder's favourite location!) where I found 2 Shelducks, 2 Mute Swans, Redshank, Turnstones, Hooded Crows and Starlings, no sign of the Bufflehead. Headed to the Grutness Pool where I found Teal and Mallard and nothing else. Then parked up at Scatness and walked down to view Loch of Gards – a few Goldeneye, Tufted Ducks, Teal, Mallard, gulls, Grey Heron and no Bufflehead.

Fitful Head from the layby by the airstrip at Sumburgh

Checked out the Pool of Virkie – lots of Wigeon, Teal, Mallard, Shelduck, Redshank, Turnstones, Curlew and gulls. Headed to Loch of Spiggie – a lovely drake Pintail was on show. Lots of Wigeon, Teal, Mallards, Tufted Duck, Goldeneye, Little Grebe, Greylag Geese, Oystercatchers and Redshanks. I spent a long time in the layby overlooking Setter (south end) – no other birders here late afternoon and no sign of the Bufflehead. Headed to Lerwick to fill up with petrol and forced myself to go into Tesco, which I didn't feel like doing, but had to really and then headed home. Pity about the Bufflehead, it would have been a new bird for me, maybe it will be re-located again tomorrow.

The last day of my 50's!!! Don't know how I got this old! Time disappears so incredibly quickly!
