Actor Thornton plays Liverpool show
Hollywood actor Billy Bob Thornton has fulfilled a "lifetime ambition" to play at Liverpool's famous Cavern nightclub.
The star is due to play in Manchester on Thursday evening after the opening date of his UK tour with his band. At the Cavern, Thornton played a mixture of 60s covers and his own songs. He told the 300-strong, sell-out crowd that the tunes of The Beatles and other Merseybeat bands "basically got me through my childhood". 'Thrilled' "This is a real honour to play here at the Cavern," the 46-year-old said. " I've got to tell you, I'm thrilled to be here. "When I was a kid, I heard music by The Beatles and Gerry and The Pacemakers and The Searchers, and that was that. "I knew I had to be in a band, and to play the Cavern is like a lifetime ambition." Thornton's large backing band included four guitarists, two drummers, a pianist and a backing singer. Thornton delayed his performance by two hours in order to watch Liverpool FC's Champions League match.
He saw the match with former Gerry and The Pacemakers frontman Gerry Marsden, who also attended the gig. Speaking after the gig, Thornton dismissed as "nonsense" reports that he and his wife, Tomb Raider star Angelina Jolie, had been barred from taking their newly adopted Cambodian son, Maddox, into the US. He said: "The truth is, we are in line with about 200 or so other families, all in the same position. "We are all waiting to have the paperwork processed." |
