The Christian Party and Christian People's Alliance are running a joint slate

The Christian Party and Christian People's Alliance have increased their share of the vote to come eighth in the European Parliament election.

The parties, who fielded joint candidate lists, received a total of 249,493 votes - 1.6% of votes cast.

It was the first time a Christian party had run in every region of Britain.

"The challenge is now to build on our result at grassroots level and begin to make ourselves known," federal executive member Dr Tom Rogers said.

"We do not despise the day of small beginnings and look to our friends across Europe, who better established, have succeeding in returning Christian MEPs to the Parliament," he added.

In London the Christian parties picked up 51,336 votes - 2.9% of the vote - up on the 45,038 gained in 2004.
