શરુઆતમાં પૃથ્વીનાં ઉત્તર ધ્રુવ (સમુદ્ર સપાટીથી) થી વિષુવવૃત્ત સુધીના અંતરનાં એક કરોડમાં ભાગને મીટર તરીકે વ્યાખ્યાયિત કરવામાં આવ્યો હતો. ૧૯૮૩થી, "શૂન્યાવકાશમાં પ્રકાશ વડે સેકંડના ૧/૨૯૯,૭૯૨,૪૫૮ ભાગમાં કપાતા અંતર મીટર કહે છે."[૨]
