About The Photographer

Uros Leva is a versatile freelance artist – photographer, graphic designer and screenwriter. He has been living in Slovenia’s second largest city Maribor for his whole life and never fails to be overawed by the beauty of the city. His connection to Maribor began the moment he was born and the more Uros experiences this city, the further he falls in love. Everyday life in Maribor is full of stimulation, not just because the city offers so much to see and do, but because of the genuinely nice and friendly people who live there. Uros is a very positive person who thinks that doing good things brings good things to happen to you.

When Uros is behind the camera, his goal is to bring out the beauty of Maribor and its surrounding area for all to see. What might be viewed as an ordinary scene by many, can be transformed completely by focussing on composition and technique to bring out artistic qualities employing patience and care. His style is instantly recognisable through the artistry of his photographs – Uros uses long exposure to collect light, creating saturated hues and adding a paint-like quality to his photographs. He tries to capture the mood of the scene and loves how the light interacts with the scene.

Maribor is the second largest city in Slovenia and also the capital of the Stajerska region, with about 96,000 inhabitants. It sits on the Drava river among the rolling green hills of northeast Slovenia wedged between Austria, Hungary and Croatia.

Maribor is a city that is known throughout Europe for it’s world class wine and is home to the world’s oldest grape vine (over 400 years old), which has been certified by the Guiness Book of World Records. Maribor is also a very culture rich city – it was named one of the European Capitals of Culture for 2012.

The Lent district is the area around the waterfront and is packed with restaurants, cafés, bars, and shops. It’s also home to the Old Vine House, the Water Tower and Judgement Tower.

Even though Maribor is Slovenia’s second-largest city it has only a third of the population of Ljubljana.

The Old Bridge or Stari Most as it is called in Slovene crosses the Drava River in Maribor and spans 270 metres long. The bridge was built in 1913 and was considered one of the most beautiful bridges in this part of the world. During the Second World War, the bridge was damaged and later rebuilt.

Maribor is compact, easy-going and friendly. The Drava River, crossed by some lovely bridges and lined with weeping willows and open-air cafés, flows through the heart of the city.

Maribor is set in the beautiful natural surroundings of the green Pohorje Mountains on the one side and the picturesque wine-growing hills on the other, with the Drava river wending its way through it.

In the 16th century Maribor came under attack by the Turks, and some of its old fortifications survived until the present day, including the late-Renaissance Maribor Water Tower.

The picturesque Maribor Water Tower or Vodni Stolp as it is called in Slovene was built in the 16th century as part of the city’s fortification against the Turkish invaders. It is of pentagonal form and consists of massive stone blocks interspersed with embrasures. The tower was also Slovenia’s first ever winery and it still functions partly as a wine shop today, specializing in top-quality Slovenian wines.

The blue Railway Bridge crosses the Drava River in Maribor and was built between 1864 and 1866. It consists of three steel spans of 57 meters supported on two riverside and two river pillars.

The Studenci footbridge or Studenska Brv as it is called in Slovene is a slim and transparent, geometrically very interesting footbridge over the Drava River in Maribor built in 2007.

The Faculty for Medicine of the University in Maribor is one of the most recognizable buildings in Maribor. It’s located on the Drava river and faces the city centre with a colouful glass facade.

After the Second World War the need has been recognized for a new Maribor bridge linking both banks of the Drava river. The bridge was completed and opened in 1963 and named Tito’s Bridge in honor of Josip Broz Tito, the former President of Yugoslavia.

Maribor, Eastern Slovenia’s prettiest city, looks beautiful in winter with the scenery of snow. Just ridiculously beautiful!

In winter with plenty of snow, Maribor looks so amazingly picturesque you may have a hard time believing it is real.

In winter, the walks along the Drava river are enchanting, and the scenery sublime.

Lovely walking paths and benches along the Drava river in Maribor are great to kick back and relax in the middle of the city at any time of the year.

The Ljudski Vrt stadium is located on the left bank of the Drava river, to the northwest of the historic city centre. The stadium holds a little less than 13,000 fans in an all-seater layout. There are three small stands which share an inter-connected roof and one main, slightly larger stand. It’s a compact but recently completely renovated ground, so the facilities are in good condition. The stadium is home not only to the local football club NK Maribor but also plays host to Slovenian national team games.

About 120 kilometres from Slovenia’s capital Ljubljana, Maribor is the second largest city in Slovenia and the surrounding areas are packed with things to do, especially if you are a lover of wine and wine roads and winter and active sports.

Maribor lies on the river Drava at the meeting point of the Pohorje Massif, the Drava Valley, the Drava Plain, and the Kozjak and the Slovene Hills.

Maribor has been awarded the title of European Capital of Culture for 2012, and is widely known for its vineyards and wine production.

Maribor also offers access to the largest ski resort in Slovenia, located just south of the city, at the Pohorje mountain range. The resort offers 42 kilometres of ski slopes, and 10 kilometres of night skiing. The resort is best known for hosting women’s World Cup alpine races in giant slalom and slalom.

Malecnik is a small village and a suburb of Maribor located on the left bank of the Drava River. The village’s best known landmark is the Subsidiary Church of the Virgin Mary on the Gorca hill that dates to 1517 with a Gothic belfry and a Baroque extension.

The village of Zgornja Korena lies on the southwestern edge of the Slovene Hills southeast of Maribor. The local parish church, built on a hill east of the village in 1787, is dedicated to Saint Barbara.
