SPEC Benchmarking Joint US/Europe Colloquium
June 22, 2007
Technical University of Dresden
Dresden, Germany
General Information
The Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation (SPEC) will hold a
one-day workshop in June 2007 at the Technical University of Dresden
(Hettnerstrasse 3; Building Potthof-Bau; Room H51) following the
technical meetings of the SPEC Open Systems Group (OSG) and SPEC
High Performance Group (HPG), planned for June 19-21. The
date (Friday, June 22) has been chosen such that attendees, in particular
from overseas, can combine it with attending the 22nd
International Supercomputing Conference to be held in Dresden
in the following week (June 26-29). The intention of the workshop
is to bring together the USA benchmarking SPECialists, with interested
people from Europe, from academia, from industry, and from the press.
The workshop will be informal: one day, no conference fee, no proceedings
(however, copies of the speakers' slides will be available), in a
low-cost university setting. Selection of the talks will be done
by the organizers, Dr. Matthias Müller (matthias.mueller@tu-dresden.de),
Technical University of Dresden, SPEC HPG Vice Chair, and Dr.
Reinhold Weicker, formerly
Fujitsu Siemens Computers, Paderborn, former SPEC OSG Vice Chair.
Among others participating in the effort will be Alan Adamson (IBM,
SPEC OSG Chair) and Dr. Wilfried Stehling (Fujitsu Siemens
Computers, Augsburg).
Workshop Program
Currently, it is planned that there will be
12 presentations at the workshop, from both SPEC and non-SPEC authors.
The plan is to have 5 sessions, 2 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon,
with coffee or lunch breaks between the sessions:
- Session 1: Keynote and a View from Outside
- Walter Bays, SPEC President: History of Computer Performance
- John McCalpin, AMD: System Balance
and Application Balance in Cost/Performance Optimization (Talk presented by Joerg
Borowski, AMD, on behalf of the author)
- Session 2: SPEC CPU2006: 3 Presentations
- Session 3: High Performance Computing: 2 Presentations
- Session 4: Power/Performance and File I/O Benchmarks: 4 Presentations
- Session 5: Java Benchmarks: 2 Presentations
For a detailed list of the program, including times, see the
program details web page. Note that the times may still
be subject to change.
In the evening, probably at 19:00 (7 PM), those participants that
are still in town are encouraged to have dinner together (no-host),
such that there can be further informal talks between the participants.
Details will be announced at the workshop.
Location
The workshop will be held at the Technical
University of Dresden, ZIH
(Center for Information Services and High Performance Computing),
street address: Hettnerstr. 3, Potthof-Bau, Hoersaal 51.
Hotel Information
Guests have the chance to stay at the very reasonably priced TU
Dresden Guest House, Weberplatz. Tram/bus station is "Strehlener
Platz", 10-15 minutes (3-4 stops) from the main railway
station. The Guest House has set aside a block of rooms for SPEC
guests at the rate of €55 per night for a single room and €70
per night for a double, with breakfast and taxes included; the SPEC block is
currently full.
Those attending the Supercomputing conference in the following week
have the choice of staying in the Guest House or moving to a hotel
close to the conference's location at the Elbe river bank.
Travel
Overseas visitors can reach Dresden from Germany's main airport Frankfurt/Main
via fast train connections (mostly direct, every 2 hours, about 5
hours) or via Lufthansa domestic flights (7 flights per day, 1 hour
flight time). The university's
web site has an English language section with a comprehensive
guide incuding information on tourism, travel, local public transportation,
sightseeing, etc.
Important travel information update (May 22, 2007): Those planning
to use Dresden airport coming to or departing from the meeting, please
note that the runway at Dresden airport will be closed on four June
weekends between June 8 and July 2, 2007. Most flights are rerouted
via Leipzig/Halle, with a shuttle bus connection. For details and
possible rerouting of flights, see http://www.dresden-airport.de/en/reisende_und_besucher/fluginformation/wichtige_info.html.
