Pumpkin Hill is the sixth stage in the Hero storyline of Sonic Adventure 2 and the second playable as Knuckles. It represents attempt to find Master Emerald pieces that were scattered after he smashed it.
Plot
After finding every Master Emerald shards on the Wild Canyon area, Knuckles sets off to the rural canyon regions nearby, after feeling a weak signal from the Master Emerald from this place.
Level layout
Appearance
Pumpkin Hill is a Halloween themed level, with ghosts, ghost trains, and more Pumpkins than the Green Goblin can shake a batglider at. It is a whimsical stage that includes some elements from Mushroom Hill Zone and various "spooky levels" from platformer games.
The major gimmicks of this level are the ghosts that make their first appearance in the game, a train that change its trajectory due to switches and rockets that provide a quick way to travel from section to section. Although the level is set above a bottomless pit, Knuckles won’t die if he falls, instead floating atop an updraft.
Other level specific objects are tall pillars with a pumpkin shape on top, called pumpkin ghost hills, pumpkins in all shapes and sizes that jiggle if punched, small houses and metal containers that can be destroyed, stone graves, tree stumps with scary faces on them, chimneys, scarecrows and pointed fences.
Level sections
Pumpkin Hill is divided into three major sections.
Knuckles will start the level in a small platform part of a large cluster of platforms and tight catwalks. The Shovel Claw upgrade is in a platform in his front. To the left of the upgrade platform a rocket will take him to Church Mountain, to the right a rocket surrounded by fences with skulls impaled will take him to Ghost Train Mountain, and going all the way backwards from where Knuckles came, a rocket surrounded by pumpkins will take him to Pumpkin Mountain.
The first section, Church Mountain, is a steep hill with a medium sized platform at the bottom, with a spring that launches Knuckles to the top of the hill, short ledges all the way up the mountain and a train circling its midsection. At the top stands a graveyard with a chapel to the side as well, along with a rocket that will lead to Pumpkin Mountain.
The second section, Ghost Train Mountain is the lowest of the three hill yet the most expanded and the one with the most gimmicks as well, with a train that switches locations. The main part of this section is composed of a central platform, called Ghost Train Turntable, where the train always starts before switching locations. There are three switches and therefore, three locations and movements the train can have. The default switch is the lowest one, which makes the train go back in forth in the turntable. The middle switch will make the train disappear to the lowest of the platforms and circle there, where two rotating spikes are as well. The third switch is the highest one, which will make the train go around the circle tracks directly below it. From the second switch mountain there's a system of platforms that branches to the middle of the three mountains, with a rocket with pumpkins surrounding will lead to Pumpkin Mountain.
The third section, Pumpkin Mountain is the highest hill, with close to nothing towards the bottom. Halfway up the mountain, there’s another train circling in the air, and right at the top there's a set of three round platforms, with pumpkins and scarecrows, which is called Pumpkin field, where a Mystic Melody is. Activated will make a trail of platforms appear, leading to a set of suspended platforms above.
Besides these, there are several pillars with giant pumpkin heads on top in the outskirts of the mountains, all of them with different expressions.
Hard Mode
Many enemies are placed around the stage, though very few of them have relevance to collecting the three emerald pieces. Of note are the Boom Boos guarding the three rockets at the starting area, though they have a propensity for falling through the ground into the abyss and sometimes respawning on top of you as you take the rocket.
On Pumpkin Mountain, the Mystic Melody won't generate any platforms but an extra life. The suspended platforms still exist and are reachable using the alternate method described below. The lost Chao, as in other missions, is a 1-Up capsule.
Other Versions
Pumpkin Hill shares its setting and level objects with Shadow's Sky Rail, including some landscapes like Church Mountain and Pumpkin Field. It's of no wonder, since both stages are located at the same mountainous area. Unlike Pumpkin Hill, which takes place at sunset, Sky Rail takes place during the day.

Big the Cat
On Ghost Train Mountain, jump down to the Ghost Train Turntable. The left track leads back to a blocked-off tunnel and behind the bars is Big, waving.
Chao containers
- Pumpkin Mountain: Halfway up the mountain, stacked together with a wooden container, on a ledge at the same eight as the ghost train.
- Ghost Train Mountain: In a platform on behind ghost pumpkin pillar, located at the end of the trail of balloons seen from the top of the mountain.
- Ghost Train Mountain: In a platform system in the middle of the tree mountains.
Gold Beetle
The Gold Beetle can be found close to the end of the empty metallic ledge on the platform where the middle switch is located, on Ghost train mountain. It only exists on the Dreamcast version of the game; it is present in the code in all Battle releases, but a bug prevents it from spawning.
Lost Chao
- Recommended upgrades: Mystic Melody
On the middle ledge of Pumpkin field there's a Mystic Melody. Activate it and follow the platforms that appear at the top of the mountain until the end.
Alternate route: No upgrades required.
Take the rocket to the top of Church Mountain. From there, take the rocket to Pumpkin Mountain. Mash the A button, when the rocket reaches the end, glide straight out. You will make it to the Lost Chao's area without needing to use the Mystic Melody.

Trivia
|
Trivia sections are bad Try and incorporate this information into the main article. See the manual of style to find out why. |
---|
- At least in the Dreamcast version, the game's counter considers there to be only 10 animals on the level, even though, as listed above, there are actually 11. After the tenth animal, the game will give an extra life and the number will blink red like usual; when the eleventh is subsequently collected, an additional life is awarded and the number ten will blink red again as well.
