[704]8File Manager/2 (FM/2) starting with version 3.6 is being
9built with OpenWatcom. Changing compilers can introduce
10unexpected problem so you may want to backup your current
11install, or at minimum have a working copy of the FM/2
12version 3.5.9 warpin available for reinstall if problems arise.
13To backup your current install simple zip up your install
14directory with its subdirectories or copy them to a different
15location.To restore simply copy the old FM/2 back to the
16its original location. Remember you can't use the new FM/2
17to do this since if it is running some files will be locked
18and won't be replaced. If you didn't backup and need to go
19back just install the 3.5.9 warpin package over the new
20install. It will warn you that the install is newer but just
21tell it to install anyway. The warpin install process is
22designed to save all your customizations. Don't delete the
23new install if you don't have a backup since this will result
24in the loss of any custom chages you have made. If you need
25to delete it to get the reinstall to work. Backup up the new
26install and then copy the *.bmp, *.tls, *.dat, *.cmd & *.ini
27files back to the install directory after the reinstall.
28Don't copy the *.str files as they are version specific.
29If you have problems be sure to report it (See Support
30at the end of this file).

[668]32File Manager/2 (FM/2) is a free OS/2(Warp)/eCS Presentation
[671]33Manager 32-bit file/directory/archive maintenance utility
34(a sort of super-Drives object, something midway between the
35Drives objects and a more traditional file manager) with plenty
[668]36of bells, whistles and utilities, drag and drop, context menus,
[642]37toolbars, bubble help and accelerator keys. If you know how
38to use OS/2, you already know how to use most of FM/2. You
39can easily glean the rest from the extensive online help,
[7]40including tutorials.
41
[642]42This document explains how to install FM/2, including
43upgrading from previous versions. It explains command line
44syntaxes (parameters in a program object) and how to get the
45program(s) running. The online help tells you how to
46actually use FM/2. I'll try to keep this brief.

[7]66FM/2 3.x installation instructions:
67==================================
68
[642]69Pre-requisite:
[668]70 WarpIN 0.9.20 or higher must be installed.
[7]71
[642]72Install (or re-install) from a FM/2 ZIP file distribution
73---------------------------------------------------------
[7]74
[642]751. Unpack the FM2*.ZIP archive in a private directory (for
76example, C:\TMP). (UNZIP.EXE works nicely to unpack the
77file.) Two WPI files, FM2.WPI and FM2UTILS.WPI will be
78unzipped.
[7]79
[642]802. Follow the instructions for installing from WPI file(s)
81below.
[7]82
83
[642]84Install (or re-install) from a FM/2 WPI file distribution
85---------------------------------------------------------
[7]86
[642]871. Open the WPS folder containing the WPI file(s).
[7]88
[642]892. Double click on FM2.WPI. Since WarpIN associates itself
90with WPI files this will start WarpIN with FM2.WPI as the
91parameter.
92
933, You may then install FM/2 to a directory of your choice
94and, if FM2UTILS.WPI is present, install FM/2 Utilities to
95a directory of your choice.
96
97NOTE: If you double click on FM2UTILS.WPI instead of
98FM2.WPI, you will only be able to install the FM/2
99Utilities. It is recommended that, even if you only want to
100install FM/2 Utilities, that you do so using FM2.WPI.
101
102
103Moving FM/2 and/or FM/2 Utilities:
104----------------------------------
105
1061. Copy your existing installation directory to the new
107location.
108
1092. If you have added your own icons to any of the FM/2
110folders, then you should move them elsewhere temporarily.
111
1123. Follow the instructions for de-installing below.
113
1144. Re-install the package using the installation
115instructions above. This will update the WarpIN database and
116reset your icons to the new locations.
117
1185. Move the icons you saved in step #2, back into the FM/2
119folders if you wish.
120
121
122De-installing FM/2 and/or FM/2 Utilities:
123-----------------------------------------
124
1251. Run Warpin without parameters.
126
1272. Right click on a package you want to de-install and
128select "de-install all packages".
129
1303. Click on OK in the "De-install Packages" window that
131appears.
132
133
134
135=================
[7]136First-time notes:
[642]137=================
[7]138
139Starting FM/2 -- how it works, customizing parameters:
140
[642]141If you start File Manager/2 (filename FM3.EXE) with no
142parameters, it opens the Drive Tree window but no directory
143windows (unless the "Save state of dir windows" toggle is
144checked -- see online help).
[7]145
[642]146File Manager/2 optionally accepts names of directories in
147the parameters field of its program object; it'll open a
148directory window for each one. Hint: If you often do
149different specific things with FM/2, you might set up a WPS
150object customized to start up ideally for each activity. For
151example, if you wanted to maintain your BBS areas, you might
152have one object with parameters like: "D:\BBSDIR
153D:\BBSDIR\MAILIN D:\BBSDIR\MAILOUT", and if you also like to
154use FM/2 to set icons on files, you might have another
155object with parameters like: "E:\MYICONS D:\NEWFILES". The
156State quicklist can also be used for this within FM/2 itself
157-- see online help.
[7]158
[642]159You can exclude drives in the parameters by prefacing the
160drive letter with "/", and there can be more than one drive
161letter behind the "/" (i.e. "/BH" to exclude both drives B:
162and H:). Hint: Many people like to use /B to exclude
163"phantom" drive B: if they have a single-floppy system.
164Similarly, you can cause drives NOT to be prescanned by the
165Drive Tree by prefacing the drive letter with ";", drives
166NOT to load icons for objects by prefacing the drive letter
167with ",", drives NOT to load subjects for objects by
168prefacing the drive letter with "`" and drives NOT to load
169longnames for objects by prefacing the drive letter with
170"'". This can be handy if you have a very slow drive like a
171CD-ROM or Zip drive. FM/2 Lite recognizes these switches,
172too. See also the Drive Flags dialog in FM/2.
[7]173
[642]174If you place the plus sign "+" (alone, separated from
175anything else by spaces) in the parameters, FM/2 will log,
176to FM2.LOG, delete, rename, move and copy operations that
177are performed by drag-and-drop or with the menus. FM/2 Lite
178recognizes this switch, too.
[7]179
[642]180The parameter "-" (alone, separated from anything else by
181spaces) causes FM/2 to ignore, not load or save, the
182previous state of directory windows (see the "Save state of
183dir windows" toggle under Config Menu->Toggles in the online
184help) for that invocation.
[7]185
[642]186You can specify the name of an alternate INI file with
187"-<inifilename>" -- for example: "-C:\FM2\MYINI.INI".
[82]188
[642]189You can also specify the INI file location with the
190environment variable FM2INI -- for example:
191 SET FM2INI=C:\FM2\MYINI.INI.
192
193
194------------------------------
[7]195How to get started using FM/2:
196-----------------------------
[642]197Please read the following sections in the online help when
198you start FM/2 for the first time: "How to use FM/2's Help,"
199"Terminology" and "General Help," then "Hints." A peek at
200the labelled "Window Layouts" pictures would probably be a
201good idea, too. The rest you can browse as you get time/feel
202the need; for instance, if you want to know what a toggle
203does, read the help under Settings notebook for that page
204(each Settings notebook page has its own Help button).
[7]205
[642]206If you prefer hardcopy help, print this file, run FM/2,
[668]207press F1, click the "Print" button at the bottom (IBM View)
[671]208or top (Newview)of the help window that appears and then print
[668]209both the "Contents" and "All sections" (keep an eye on the printer,
[642]210after page 100 of "All sections" as the Help Manager will
211begin printing its own help then -- you may want to abort
212printing at that point). Advanced and/or curious users may
213also want to print FM3TOOLS.DAT and ARCHIVER.BB2. Be sure
214you have plenty of paper and ink handy -- the package is
215well documented. You'll probably also want a three-ring
216binder and hole punch to get it bound, as staples aren't
217going through that puppy. You can, of course, print only the
218sections that are of particular interest to you.
[7]219
220Additional documentation:
221------------------------
222 FM3.HLP: FM/2's online help file.
223
[642]224Look in the FM/2 Docs subfolder of the File Manager/2 folder
225for easy access to all documentation.
[7]226
227
228Bonus programs:
229==============
230
[642]231You'll note the extra objects that the Install program
232creates in the FM/2 Tools subfolder of the File Manager/2
233folder. FM/2 is modular, so that you can get directly to
234some of its components without running the entire ball of
235wax. This may allow you to enhance the behavior of some of
236your other applications in the WPS tradition. You don't
237_have_ to keep these around, of course -- FM/2 itself
238contains all their functionality.
[7]239
[642]240ARCHIVE VIEWER/2: Intended for drag-and-drop operation (or
241WPS association) with WPS objects or other applications.
242Drag an archive onto it, drop it, get an archive listing
243box. FM/2's installation program sets up some associations
244between archive files and this program by file extension.
245AV/2 will try to display whatever you give it as
246sensibly as it can. Filename AV2.EXE.
[7]247
[642]248EA VIEWER: Drag a file system object onto it and it'll show
249you the object's extended attributes. Filename EAS.EXE.
[7]250
[642]251INI VIEWER: Drag an .INI file onto it and it'll show you its
252contents. Filename INI.EXE.
[7]253
[642]254BOOKSHELF VIEWER: Shows all .INF files in a listbox and lets
255you pick the one(s) you want to view. If you give any
256command line argument, the .HLP files on the HELP path will
257be shown instead (the Helpfile Viewer object calls
258VIEWINFS.EXE with "dummy" for an argument, for example).
259Filename VIEWINFS.EXE.
[7]260
[642]261PROCESS KILLER: Lets you kill off renegade processes. An
262English version of PSTAT.EXE must be on your PATH. Filename
263KILLPROC.EXE.
[7]264
[642]265UNDELETER: Lets you undelete files (via interface with
266UNDELETE.COM). Drag a file system object onto it and it'll
267let you undelete files for that drive. Filename UNDEL.EXE.
[7]268
[642]269VISUAL TREE: Opens a Drive Tree window (like the WPS Drives
270object with more horsepower). Filename VTREE.EXE.
[7]271
[642]272VISUAL DIRECTORY: Opens a Directory Container window; drag a
273file system object onto it and this will open its directory
274(like a WPS directory Folder with more horsepower). Filename
275VDIR.EXE.
[7]276
[642]277COLLECTOR: Opens a Collector window. Filename VCOLLECT.EXE.
278Two other objects, "See all files" and "Seek and scan" are
279created which call up the Collector and go directly to
280dialogs for the appropriate purpose.
[7]281
[642]282GLOBAL VIEWER: Opens a global view of a drive or drives.
283Filename GLOBAL.EXE.
[7]284
[642]285DATABAR: Opens a databar showing some system information.
286Filename DATABAR.EXE.
[7]287
[642]288DIRSIZE: Shows where drive usage is concentrated. Filename
289DIRSIZE.EXE.
[7]290
[642]291FM/2 LITE: A simplified interface for "dummies." Filename
292FM4.EXE.
[7]293
[642]294FM/2's install creates FM2.CMD, AV2.CMD, VDIR.CMD,
295VTREE.CMD, VCOLLECT.CMD, UNDEL.CMD, KILLPROC.CMD, INI.CMD,
296EAS.CMD, DIRSIZE.CMD, VIEWINFS.CMD and VIEWHELP.CMD files
297for you in a directory "utils" off the install directory.
298You should add this directory to your PATH= statement in
299CONFIG.SYS (type HELP PATH at a command line for more info).
300If you prefer, FM/2's INSTALL builds a SETENV.CMD in the
301FM/2 directory which you can call to set the PATH for FM/2
302in any given session without modifying CONFIG.SYS.
[7]303
304
305Troubleshooting:
306===============
307
[642]308If FM/2 won't run, the probable culprit is CONFIG.SYS. Your
[668]309LIBPATH statement should contain a ".;" entry. If yours
[642]310doesn't, add it. It's standard for an OS/2 installation, but
311some buggy install programs knock it out because they
312translate entries to their full pathname before rewriting
[668]313(so ".;" gets translated to whatever the current directory
314is for the buggy install program). What this ".;" entry does
[642]315is allow a program to find and use .DLL files in the
316program's current directory -- obviously something you want
317programs to be able to do, otherwise you'd have to put every
318application's .DLLs into directories already on the LIBPATH,
319or add the directories of all applications to the LIBPATH, a
[7]320rather huge pain in the, uh, neck.
321
[642]322If things in FM/2 are suddenly acting strange after an
[671]323upgrade, first check the integrity of the install using
324using WarpIN. If it shows a problem rerun the install
325package. If that fails try installing to a new directory
[668]326or backup your existing directory so you can save any changes
327you made to the template files then uninstall and reinstall.
[671]328Once you have FM/2 working migrate the *.ini, *.dat, *.tls,
329*.bb2 and *.cmd from your old install/backup to recover your
330custom settings
[7]331
[642]332If the "FM/2 Online Help" object in the "FM/2 Docs"
333subfolder won't work properly, you've got a version of
334VIEW.EXE that won't directly display help (.HLP) files. Use
335SEEHELP.EXE from the FM/2 Utilities package to get around
336this problem (or upgrade your version of OS/2).
[7]337
[642]338Don't drag files over Netscape -- it will lock up if files
339(not WPS objects; there's a subtle difference) are dragged
340over it.
[7]341
[642]342If you get a popup dialog that needs to be reported to the
343maintainer, you can either take a screen shot or you can
344capture the information from STDERR with:
[398]345
346 FM3 2>STDERR.LOG
347
[642]348This technique works for all the FM/2, FM/2 Lite and all the
349standalone applets.
[398]350
[642]351If you are having trouble with Drag and Drop operations, try
352the + command line switch described above. The content of
353FM2.LOG may be helpful.
[398]354
355
[55]356Known problems/shortcomings:
357===========================
[11]358
[642]359- FM/2 does not properly report sizes of some files with
360long name resident on Win95/NT drives.
[11]361
[642]362- File List Container fails to fill after drive change
363SYS0039 error.
[55]364
[642]365- Tree switching on Focus/Directory Change appears to be
366slower than expected.
[55]367
[668]368- Access to LS120 and FAT32 drives may be slower than expected
[55]369
[642]370- Icon display in Directory Container does not always match
371WPS icons
[55]372
[668]373- Spurious WPS Objects Handles may be created during some
[642]374operations
[55]375
[704]376- Trying to run Global.exe from the command line in 4OS2
377(perhaps other shells) results in the execution of 4OS2's "Global"
378command. Global.exe can be run by placing it in quotes or
379prefixing it with *. See 4OS2's documentation for more information.
380
381- As with any OS/2 program significant changes (such as our
382change to OpenWatcom) will result in the incompatibility of
383older (VAC) exes with new dlls and viceversa. Attempting to run
384OpenWatcom exes with a VAC dll loaded in memory or in your
385libpath ahead of the new version will result in a SYS3175 in
386popuplog.os2. The reverse gives a SYS2070. If you experience these
387problems search your libpath for fm3dll.dll and remove or rename
388it. Your libpath should have "." (without the quotes) as your
389first entry to minimize the likelyhood of this problem. FM/2's
390installer does not add the FM/2 directory to the libpath.
391
[671]392- See http://svn.netlabs.org/fm2/report/1 for a complete list of
[668]393currently active bugs
