Like the smaller 1988 Trabant 1.1,also Wartburgs were"refreshed"into same year in style and power train(supplied by VW--the same of Golf 1.3 lt.--that replaces definitively the 2-stroke 1-lt.powered W 353) Was made that version in 3 body editions,1.3 Limousine,1.3 Tourist(wagon)and 1.3 Trans(pickup) |

Last Wartburgs 1.3 were built in 1991 and for the 1st time was available also in a Irmscher(!)-tuned version |

I've seen the presentation of the Wartburg 1.3 on the Leipziger Messe in 1988 (a short trip to the GDR, just for joke). It was unbelievable. A complete hall on the fairground (except a few Trabant and Barkas) was reserved for that car. The hall was openend, hunderds of people were flooding inside. When the hall was full, the people had for a short time the chance to see the cars (just 2 1.3 were shown on the Wartburg-place), then all people had to leave the hall, so that the next hundreds can come in. On of the bizarrest scenes I've seen in my life. |

Something for Wartburg-Fans: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zkbdzsy0-Ik Totally strange, but just a few minutes ago this song came again in my mind, even I have heard it just one time, when it was released. |

In Finland some Wartburg owners made four-stroke 353s way before the factory, using the 1.5 Ford V4 from SAAB 96. |

There where some rumours about Renault-12 engine conversion on West Europe countries. In 70s British dealers offered 2-barrel downdraft Weber carburetor conversion for better mileage. -- Last edit: 2009-12-11 18:48:54 |

Yes. And in late 1967 some copies were built with a birotor Wankel engine! Around the same time a 4-cylinder 1592 cc engine was develloped, and a few years later they started to experiment with the 1300 Dacia/Renault engine. This was to be presented on the Leipzig show in 1978, even the brochures had been printed, but then the autorities stopped the whole thing, because the production quantities would be too low as the 4-stroke version would only be for export to the West. And in 1974 the UK-importer proposed to fit the Morris Marina 1300 engine in it, and in 1980 they tried to make a 3-cylinder 4-stroke engine out of the original 2-stroke engine. All these ideas didn't get any commercial result, though. All this (and many more things) you can find in the great book "Voitures des Paus de l'Est" by Bernard Vermeylen (ETAI, 2008). |

In the issue 5/2011 of the "Oldtimer Markt" was written about this rumours in the Wartburg 353-article. Not just rumours, some single conversions were built as prototypes, indeed meant for Western export-markets. Since Dacia was unable to deliver the 1300-ccm-engines, they ordered some engines directly at Renault in France. The engine fitted into the car (the VW-engine has caused bad dramas some years later), the car ran, it was planned to present it in 1978, but this idea failed for other reasons - because due the extreme cumbersome socialist economy-constitution, the heavily backlogged industrial-combinates were unable to arrange and erect the needed capacities. The final result was: to stop the export to Western countries. Annother coffin-nail for the existence of the Soviet Colony, named DDR... |

P.S. Shall I keep the issue for you, as the other with articles about COMECON-cars, too? ![]() |
