Re: [NAFEX] paw paws
If you got the seeds from John, they have probably been kept cool and moist
through the winter. Plant them now in deep pots about 12 inches deep
minimum, better is 18 inches. Cover the seeds with at least 2 inches of
soil, water them and be patient. They germinate by sending down a long
root before putting up leaves and may take two to three months before you
see anything. Strong growth is dependant on a good supply of sulfur in the
soil. How much? I can't say for sure, but without enough of it your
seedlings will be slow growing, thin and weak for the first year or so.
With it they may grow up to two feet the first year.
I've been up to see John a couple of times and thoroughly enjoyed my visits
and learned much from him, but the grafted PA Golden I got from him
languished for two years with poor growth before it finally died out last
year. I'm waiting to see if the rootstock survives this year to try
another graft.
