[nafex] Surround and disease

There are very few non-vectored diseases that Surround suppresses.

There are vectored diseases that Surround can help to suppress like
Pierce's disease in grapes and bacterial wilts on cucurbits but only
through suppression of the vectoring insect.

Multi-year research suggests that there is a partial suppression of sooty
blotch and flyspeck . One study, in 2000, showed cedar apple rust
suppression but I have no confirming data. The only labeled disease for
fruit trees is fabrea leafspot on pears.

However, Surround, tank-mixed with sulfur compounds is quite effective.

Surround pH is near neutral and the material is inert. Surround is not
alkaline. Only when tank-mixed with an alkaline substance like lime-sulfur
(calcium polysulfide) would the film be alkaline. Thanks for catching that
Mike.

Subject: [nafex] Fungal attributes of Surround

I saw in the latest issue of Mother Earth News a nicely-written blurb by
Doreen about the Surround spray titled "Ghostly Clay a Savior in the
Orchard." One thing that caught my attention about this kaolin clay spray
this time around was its being effective for fungus. Supposedly the fine
clay particles "act as an alkaline barrier to fungal spores." The assertion
is made that Surround specifically suppresses Cedar Apple Rust disease.
Does
anyone else have knowledge of this?  I always understood the acidic
reaction
of sulfur gave that material it's short-term antifungal abilities. An
alkaline argument on behalf of Surround seems counter to the mode of action
of sulfur. Up till now the Engelhard people (who manufacture Surround) have
made no specific disease claims about this product.

In the spirit of always wanting to learn more,
Michael
