Hi Victoria:

I am not aware of it being used in horticulture except as shorthand
for Multiple Variable analysis.  That shorthand is usually hyphenated,
i.e., multi-var analysis.

An example of multi-var analysis would be to evaluate shoot growth as
a function of soil moisture and nitrogen.  Obviously a shortage of
either one will diminish shoot growth rate.
