Last summer I tried propagating about 40 'vegatative growth' sticks of 
prunus tormentosa. I need a bunch, at least a hundred or so for a fruiting 
snow fence. We have 3 beauties, 6' high and 4 years old in our garden to 
take cuttings from.  Anyway, the cuttings I took last summer I put into a 
half mix of peat moss and garden soil and applied to the stem base 'Rootone' 
powder (napthaleneacetamide).  Out of 40 sticks I got one taker. I really 
want to grow my own. This fall I stuck a big handfull into a row like they 
were ribes, just to see if that might work next spring. We'll see. Sure 
looking for any propagating hints, even on prunus in general if no one has 
done tormentosa. Thanks!

Hi Del:

I had some pretty good success with prunus persica this past 
season thanks to awesome advice extolled to me by Lon, Yorba & Ed.
Timing is everything when taking cuttings and the really powerful IBA, 
(powder-type) although I did get starts with white & yellow willow mix too.
The big hitch is, you absolutely need some kind of a misting 
system/propagating containment to thwart transpiration/evaporation while 
rooting begins to develop and also underneath heat & a way to monitor that 
heat to try to keep the bottom at an ideal temp while the higher up in the box 
not as warm. I think I found a 2ft long composter thermometer @ Agway for 
10-20 bux, not sure?
I found a 6 head mister @ Sears hardware last summer for 19 bux and built
a concrete block bed with course sand & perlite for damping. 50/50 mix.
I did not bother with a timer for the misting just every 3 or 4 hours or so turn 
it on for a half hour.
The cold water would also keep the top of the bed somewhat cooler too.
Having said all that. To toss cold water on that whole process? 
Yorba reported success just by using a pot/s and plastic, so.........
I know this rookie propagator will be trying both ways, this upcoming season.
