Thomas: I think the short answer is yes.  Pollination, and formation of
seeds, does determine the shape of apples.  Beyond that, I believe the
number of ovaries successfully pollinated, and the consequent formation
of seed cavities, is the primary determinant of size of the fruit,  when
other factors, such as nutrient availability and moisture, are equal.  I
have often counted as many as ten seed cavities on some of the larger
apples I have grown over the years.  Thanks, bees.   Just picked an
asian pear weighing two pounds.  A Nijiseiki (aka 20th Century).  What a
brute.  Many others at 1 1/2-1/34 pounds.  Just big this year.    Rgds,
