[nafex] Surround WP
Hi Kevin,
Rest easy!
The 5% 'other' is made up of adjuvants or additives that are important for
the product to perform (spread, stick, mix easily, etc.) properly. It took
us years to figure out how best to formulate the product. The ingredients
are, of course, a trade secret.
Engelhard developed Surround jointly with the USDA - Agricultural Research
Service. Our goal was to make a pest control that is effective and safe.
All of the ingredients in Surround WP were disclosed to the respected
Organic Material Review Institute (OMRI) and Surround WP is listed by OMRI
for use in organic production.
Surround WP is arguably one of the safest, if not the safest, pest controls
available - and that includes organic products.
Surround is exempt from requirements of a tolerance for a residue per the
EPA. In layman's terms this means that the EPA does not find reason to set
a limit on the amount of Surround residue on the crop. Surround WP also
has no pre-harvest interval.
Most remarkably, all the ingredients in Surround WP are on the FDA list for
food use. This means that the ingredients in Surround WP could actually be
used as a food additive.
Regarding aluminum, the aluminum in soils, and clays like kaolin, is tied
up in the form of very stable aluminum silicate compounds - not aluminum
metal. So tightly bound is the aluminum that aluminum metal was not used
much until this century when a process to free the aluminum metal was
developed.

Subject: [nafex] Re: Kaolin Clay
We have been using Surround for two years now and we would recommend
it so far.
(My only concern is the 5% other, they will not tell you what it is
and upon doing a patent search I find that it could have aluminum and
or other unhealthy minerals. It was passed by some Organic Certifying
agency but I have no idea as to their legitimacy. This process of
organic certification is new to me, but I was told that they are all
private companies and I am wondering what prevents them from being
bought out or bribed, this is big, big business, and the incentive to
shop around until finding an agency that passes one's products
despite its defects seems highly likely to me. To keep some of the
ingredients secret seems suspicious, the process of making Surround
sounds complex enough without having secrets about the ingredients,
IMHO, unless they are ingredients that we don't want to know about.
ATTRA has the name of the agency.)
(If you do a search in Nafex groups on "Surround" you will find a
discussion of this previously.)
