Another angle:

The breeders in the prairie states were playing with native crab species
(Mercer?) and with M. baccata and M.Xrobusta (Cherry crab, Sylvia). 
Perhaps "European" originally refereed to ancestry/bloodlines instead of
actural origin of seedling.
