Ocean 2024 CPX: Pacific Fleet and PLA Navy hold comprehensive missile and artillery live fires

16.09.2024

Warships of the Russian Pacific Fleet and the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy, acting in a joint unit, have completed comprehensive live fires with the use of missile and artillery weaponry in the Sea of Japan during the Ocean 2024 strategic naval drills.

Russia has dispatched more than 15 warships to participate in this episode of the exercise: the flagship of the Pacific Fleet missile cruiser Varyag, the frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov, the large anti-submarine ship Admiral Panteleyev, the corvettes Sovershenny, Rezky, Aldar Tsydenzhapov, and two diesel submarines. More than 10 naval aircraft of the Pacific Fleet and the Russian Aerospace Forces supported the naval group.

The destroyers Xining and Wuxi, and the frigate Linyi were involved in the drills from the Chinese PLA Navy.

During the training, a joint Russian-Chinese naval group eliminated an attack threat posed by uncrewed surface vehicles and FPV drones of the mock enemy. This mission involved Ka-29 assault helicopters, Grachonok anti-sabotage boats, and shipborne electronic warfare systems.

The minesweepers Anatoly Shlemov and Yakov Balyayev provided mine countermeasures support for the operation. Tu-142 and Il-38 anti-submarine aircraft conducted long-range anti-submarine air patrol, while Ka-27P deck-based helicopters trained in anti-submarine search with the use of underwater hydroacoustic stations.

The detected submarine of a mock enemy was hit with depth charged dropped from anti-submarine aircraft and with rocket depth charges fired from the RBU-6000 ASW launchers.

As part of the exercise, the joint naval group repelled a mock air attack. Aerial targets were engaged with the use of shipborne artillery and Kinzhal surface-to-air missile system aboard the large anti-submarine ship Admiral Panteleyev.

During a sea battle with the mock enemy's ship detachment, the crew of the frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov launched an Uran cruise missile. The warships performed artillery live fires at naval shields imitating a mock enemy ship battle force.

Moreover, the joint detachment performed joint tactical manoeuvring and signal drills.

The actions of the Russian-Chinese warships were observed by 24 representatives of 10 countries aboard the frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov.

More than 400 warships, submarines and support vessels, over 120 naval aircraft, some 7,000 units of weaponry, military and special hardware, and more than 90,000 personnel participate in the drills, which take place in the waters of the Pacific and Arctic oceans, Mediterranean, Caspian, and Baltic seas. The Ocean 2024 strategic command post exercise is aimed at checking the readiness of the senior staff of the Russian Navy to operate all-arms groups of forces in the areas of responsibility, to solve non-standard operational tasks, to make full use of high-precision weapons, advanced and modern weapons and military hardware in the practical part of the exercise, and to expand cooperation with the navies of partner countries to perform joint maritime missions.
