Ocean 2024 CPX: MiG-31BM interceptors cover surface action group

15.09.2024

During the Ocean 2024 strategic naval drills, a pair of MiG-31BM high-altitude interceptors were tasked with covering the Pacific Fleet surface action group over the international waters of the Japanese Sea.

An Il-38 anti-submarine aircraft acted as the enemy and attempted to approach the surface group to bomb the warships.

Having received coordinates from the radio engineering units, the MiG-31BM interceptors were scrambled from one of the airfields, and entered the assigned area to identify the target. After that, they launched long-range air-to-air missiles to hit the target.

After completing the tasks, the fighter jets practised air-to-air operations to fight against mock enemy fighter jets which were covering enemy bombers.

According the training plan of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, formations and units of the Russian Navy have started taking part in the Ocean 2024 strategic command post exercise, which is to last until 16 September 2024. The exercise, which is one of the most important operational and combat training events of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in 2024, is to be conducted in a bilateral format under the overall command of Admiral Aleksandr Moiseyev, the Commander-in-Chief of the Navy.
