301st Bomb Wing

During the Korean War -- from June 25, 1950 until the ceasefire on July 27, 1953 -- 18 flying units including the 301st Bomb Wing and 97th Bomb Wing filled the skies with their B-29s and B-50s. Supporting the massive flying operations, 22 new support squadrons activated, ranging from the 7504th Food Services Squadron to the 97th Maintenance Squadron.

From 1947 to 1951 Strategic Air Command's 301st Bombardment Wing was based at Smoky Hill Air Force Base, Kan., operating B-29 aircraft. By 1951 the 301st Bombardment Wing was stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base, LA, eventually equipped with B-47s and B-52s By 1961 the 301st Bombardment Wing was based at Lockbourne Air Force Base [later Rickenbacker Air Force Base], operating the B-47 bomber and EB-47 electronic warfare aircraft.
