Singapore and Communication Satellite Systems

During 1994 Singapore Telecommunications teamed with Pasifik Satelit Nusantara of Indonesia and Hughes to form a joint venture for mobile telecommunications services in the Asian theater. From this start, the Asia Pacific Mobile Telecommunications company was born, but the Indonesian partner was replaced with PRC government investors. Program details were still sketchy at the end of 1994, but initial operations as early as 1998 were an objective. Meanwhile, Singapore Telecommunications was examining the possibility of operating its own spacecraft for television broadcasting and telephone services by 1997-1998. The spacecraft would likely carry C-band and Ku-band transponders for its principal mission (References 372-373).
