On 31 October 2003 China and India backed the European Union's Galileo global satellite system, a network of 30 orbiting satellites designed to open up a lucrative field of high technology and support industries that require pinpoint accuracy. Despite objections from Washington, China decided to invest £140 million in the program. India is to invest £210 million in the scheme, Loyola de Palacio, the EU's transport commissioner, said.
