AN/ASN-175 Cargo Utility GPS Receiver (CUGR)

The Cargo Utility GPS Receiver (CUGR) is a Dzus-mount P(Y) GPS navigation system for worldwide military aviation operations. It is a PPS version of Trimble's 2101 I/O Approach and meets the performance standards for Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) for enroute, terminal and non-precision approach phases of flight as specified in the US Army Aircraft GPS Integration Guide (GIG). The unit continuously checks accuracy using Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring (RAIM) and predicts RAIM conditions for approach. The CUGR can automatically sequence up to 20 flight plans with 20 waypoints each, showing nearest airport, planning vertical descents, displaying minimum safe altitudes as well as many other features. The receiver incorporates Jeppesen's NavData card including airports, approaches, SIDS, STARS, VORs, intersections, NDBs, airspace boundaries and MEAs. The unit can be interfaced with HSI, CDI, autopilot or air data computers to maximize the flexibility of the system, all within a single unit. The receiver is also Night Vision Goggle (NVG) compatible.

Trimble will provide the Army Communications-Electronics Command (CECOM) as many as 3,600 receivers. The CUGR system will be installed on U.S. military helicopters including selected UH-1, UH-60, OH-58 and CH-47 aircraft. The equipment will provide pilots Precise Positioning Service (PPS) with GPS navigation and capabilities similar to Trimble's FAA-certified commercial systems.

The AN/ASN 175 CUGR will be installed as a stand-alone navigational system. Stand-alone meaning it is not embedded with another navigational system such as doppler or Inertial Navigation System (INS). CUGR will be integrated with flight instruments (CDI) and warning/enunciators. The CUGR will also interface with Aviation Mission Planning System (AMPS) to accept mission planning data, allow output of post mission data, permit field software reprogramming, and accept initialization data from a keying device for the purpose of direct Y- code acquisition. The CUGR is the objective solution for the UH-1 fleet.

The Cargo Utility GPS Receiver (CUGR) will provide the Army's UH-1 aviation fleet with a receiver integration that meets FAA requirements for operating under instrument flight rules in National Air Space beyond the year 2000. While the CUGR is the objective GPS receiver for the UH-1 helicopter, other aircraft may also utilize CUGR as an interim system. CUGR is a modified commercial design consisting of a receiver and a remote antenna. Support will be streamlined featuring a five-year sealed unit manufacturer warranty. AVIMs can make minor external repairs such as replacements of fuses, switches, and knobs utilizing organizational maintenance kits.
