PRESS ALERT: Cochran Chairs Governmental Affairs
Subcommittee Hearing on 'National Missile Defense and the ABM Treaty'

Washington, D.C. - Senator Thad Cochran (R-MS) will chair a hearing on "National Missile Defense and the ABM Treaty" on Thursday, May 1, before the Governmental Affairs Subcommittee on International Security, Proliferation, and Federal Services. The hearing will begin at 2:00 p.m. in Room 342 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building.

The hearing will examine the relationship between the Administration's proposed "3+3" national missile defense plan and the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty.

"It is important to understand whether the Administration's own missile defense plan complies with the ABM Treaty," said Cochran. "Some are suggesting that interpretations of treaty language should be agreed upon by Russia and the U.S. before any deployment of a national missile defense takes place."

Mr. John D. Holum, Director, Arms Control and Disarmament Agency, will testify before the Subcommittee.
