Dong Gong 429 unknown type pile driver
The floating pile drivers in PLAN service are designated by a combination of two Chinese characters followed by three-digit number. The first Chinese character indictates the fleet with which the ship is in service, with East (Dong) for East Sea Fleet, North (Bei) for North Sea Fleet, and South (Nan) for South Sea Fleet. Hence, Dong Gong [Eastern workers] 429 Nan Gong [Southern workers] 681 The second Chinese character is Gong, short for Gong-Cheng, meaning engineering or worker in Chinese, because these ships are ships built for engineering projects. The pennant numbers may have changed due to the post-2012 change of Chinese naval ships naming convention.
