Guinea-Conakry is a key player for stability in the region, the cement in the center of the six countries most of which are in crisis. This is concretely reflected in the permanent deployment by the Guinean armed forces, from 2000-2001, a heavy security deployed at the borders. Thus, the Guinean defense, besides the national role, also mission is to intervene in favor of peace in the sub region.

Guaranteeing the security of the Republic and its institutions, the Guinean armed forces have critical missions:

  • to defend the territorial integrity,
  • actively contribute to the maintenance of peace in the sub-region,
  • maintain national cohesion,
  • participation socio-economic development of the country
  • meet internal and external commitments in implementing bilateral agreements in the framework of ECOWAS, the AU or the UN.

Thus, the policy of Defence of Guinea is primarily guided by the desire to preserve peace and to respect the rules of international law.

Under the concept of defense, the Guinean armed forces have the gendarmerie, the army, the air force and the navy. The President of the Republic, Commander of FAG and defense minister has a military office director and a chief of General Staff. The General Staff of the Armed is responsible for matters relating to the preparation of plans and guidelines for the overall organization and implementation of forces. The army staffs lead in turn the training missions, training and operational readiness of the troops.

Over the last two decades, the armed forces have been engaged in various operations in the face of territorial aggression attempts, in national security operations for the benefit of neighboring countries (Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea-Bissau), in sub regional or international money transactions (Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Haiti). Like other West African countries, Guinea is preparing also to send a contingent to the borders of Chad and Sudan in the peaceful settlement of the Darfur events.
