Report of the Panel of Experts on Sierra Leone Diamonds and Arms December 2000, S/2000/1195 -- Diamonds have become an important resource for Sierra Leone's Revolutionary United Front (RUF) in sustaining and advancing its military ambitions. Estimates of the volume of RUF diamonds vary widely, from as little as $25 million per annum to as much as $125 million. Whatever the total, it represents a major and primary source of income for the RUF, and is more than enough to sustain its military activities.

"Skip" Bowman, USN Undersea Warfare Fall 2000 -- Although our modern nuclear reactors offer enough stored energy to power the ship throughout its lifetime, their mechanical drive propulsion systems immediately reserve 75-80 percent of useful reactor power output exclusively and unalterably for propulsion. If we incorporate an integrated electric power system, large amounts of reactor power output could be placed on a common electrical bus, allowing allocation of that energy as determined by tactical requirements, whether that be answering a maneuvering bell or delivering payload or a combination of the two. The ability to redistribute power on demand will give the commanding officer enormous operational flexibility.

Mine and Countermine Operations in the Battle of Kursk Andrew Remson + Debbie Anderson - 25 April 2000 - The number of mines employed and their density both far exceeded the figures for earlier campaigns. Before the battle began the Soviets had laid some 529,000 anti-tank mines and 468,000 anti-personnel mines. The average density in the three Army defense belts was 1,500 anti-tank mines and 1,700 anti-personnel mines per kilometer of front ~ three to four times as many as in earlier operations. Impressed by the effectiveness of the minefields at Kursk in slowing the advance of the German tank-heavy forces, the Soviets placed increased importance on minefields, properly covered by small arms, artillery, and anti-tank fire, not only in the defense but also in protecting the flanks of an attack. They put considerably more emphasis on laying minefields than most western armies. The last combat engineer text published before the breakup of the Soviet Union, for example, stated, "Minefields are the principal type of artificial obstacle in modern combined arms combat. They are highly effective, easy to set up, and difficult to overcome." The authors supported this thesis with data from the Battle of Kursk, 45 years before.

The first NATO weapons employed in Operation ALLIED FORCE in Kosovo, Splendid's TLAMs projected maritime power ashore against broad target sets in a land-locked theater. In contributing an undisclosed number of rounds to the 238 TLAMs fired, Splendid's operation means TLAM is now combat-proven for Britain.
