DOD Announces Recruiting and Retention Numbers For Fiscal 2013, Through August 2013


The Department of Defense announced today recruiting and retention statistics for the active and reserve components for fiscal 2013, through August.

• Active Component.

• Recruiting. All four active services met or exceeded their numerical accession goals for fiscal 2013, through August.

o Army – 62,453 accessions, with a goal of 61,620; 101 percent
o Navy – 36,565 accessions, with a goal of 36,565; 100 percent
o Marine Corps – 28,128 accessions, with a goal of 28,085; 100 percent
o Air Force – 24,335 accessions, with a goal of 24,335; 100 percent

• Retention. The Army, Air Force, and Marine Corps exhibited strong retention numbers for the 11th month of fiscal 2013. The Navy exhibited strong retention numbers in the mid-career and career categories. However, the Navy's achievement of 85 percent in the initial category is a result of reduced accessions from four to six years ago.

• Reserve Component.

• Recruiting. Five of the six reserve components met or exceeded their fiscal-year-to-date 2013 numerical accession goals. The Army Reserve remains 3,206 accessions short of its fiscal goal.

o Army National Guard – 45,539 accessions, with a goal of 45,047; 101 percent
o Army Reserve – 24,114 accessions, with a goal of 27,320; 88 percent
o Navy Reserve – 5,296 accessions, with a goal of 5,241; 101 percent
o Marine Corps Reserve – 8,778 accessions, with a goal of 8,744; 100 percent
o Air National Guard – 9,465 accessions, with a goal of 9,465; 100 percent
o Air Force Reserve – 7,040 accessions, with a goal of 5,593; 126 percent

• Attrition – All reserve components have met their attrition goals. Current trends are expected to continue. (This indicator lags due to data availability.)
