DoD Announces Recruiting and Retention Numbers for May

The Department of Defense announced today its recruiting and retention statistics for the active and reserve components for the month of May.

  • Active duty recruiting.  Three of the four services met or exceeded recruiting goals for May.  Although the Army missed May’s recruiting goal it remains above the year-to-date mission by approximately 2,000 accessions ahead of their active-duty year-to-date goal.

Accessions Goal Percent
Army 5,101 5,500 93
Navy 2,709 2,709 100
Marine Corps 2,225 1,665 134
Air Force 2,451 2,451 100

  • Active duty retention.  Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force met or exceeded overall retention missions.
  • Reserve forces recruiting. Four of the six reserve components met or exceeded their recruiting goals in May.

Accessions Goal Percent
Army National Guard 5,612 6,403 88
Army Reserve 3,929 3,694 106
Navy Reserve 913 866 105
Marine Corps Reserve 1043 937 111
Air National Guard 736 955 77
Air Force Reserve 675 646 104

·         Reserve forces retention. For May, Army National Guard retention was 108 percent of the cumulative goal of 23,081, and Air National Guard retention was 99 percent of its cumulative goal of 7,478. Both the Army and Air Guard are currently at 100 and 99 percent of their end strength, respectively. Losses in all reserve components for April are well within acceptable limits. Indications are that trend will continue into May.
