DoD Announces Recruiting and Retention Numbers for March

The Department of Defense announced today its recruiting and retention statistics for the active and reserve components for the month of March.

  • Active duty recruiting.  All services exceeded their recruiting goals in March.

Accessions Goal Percent
Army 5,396 5,200 104
Navy 2,828 2,822 100
Marine Corps 1,688 1,647 102
Air Force 3,164 3,146 100

  • Active duty retention.   All services are projected to meet their retention goals for the current fiscal year.

  • Reserve forces recruiting.   Four of the six reserve components met or exceeded their recruiting goals in March.

Accessions Goal Percent
Army National Guard 6,651 6,540 102
Army Reserve 2,261 2,534 89
Navy Reserve 757 870 87
Marine Corps Reserve 457 375 122
Air National Guard 834 834 100
Air Force Reserve 722 616 117

  • Reserve forces retention.  For March, Army National Guard retention was 108 percent of the cumulative goal of 16,949, and Air National Guard retention was 100 percent of its cumulative goal of 5,100. Both the Army and Air Guard are currently at 96 and 99 percent of their end strength, respectively. Enlisted losses in all reserve components for February are generally lower than the same period reported last year.  Indications are that trend will continue into March.
