FREE BIENNIAL: PROJECTS: NICK GRINDELL
BERLIN BY BOAT
NICK GRINDELL

Cruise through Berlin for free!

The first 22 people to mail a request to <boatcard@gmx.net> will receive one of a limited edition of postcards in the series "Per Boot durch Berlin" (published by mikrozep, Berlin, 1998). The only condition is that the postal address supplied must be in the Greater New York area (zip codes 10000 11999).

These postcards are the crystallized form of a poetry performance during which a number of found slides from a fleamarket, cataloguing a variety of seafaring vessels, were projected, each illustrating a recited text consisting of a pair of Berlin locations plus a repeated stanza consisting of multiply plagiarized and translated lines.

Although the names of streets, squares, etc. were chosen chiefly by virtue of their phonetic or semantic charm, each postcard also represents a trajectory for navigating the real city of Berlin. The recommended mode of transport is Shank's Pony, as few of the sites are actually accessible by boat, in spite of Berlin's wealth of waterways.
