Project name: King Open/Cambridge Street Upper Schools and Community Complex
Project location: Cambridge, Massachusetts
Firm name: William Rawn Associates, Architects with Arrowstreet
Jury comments: This public realm project comprises delightful and carefully-considered places for learning, as well as indoor and outdoor spaces for the surrounding community. The exterior is colorful and inviting. Indoors, the spaces are lively and well-connected, with special attention paid to classrooms. Smart moves–like the sawtooth windows of the library–make a massive complex approachable and comfortable. In addition to being a set of buildings that welcomes anyone and everyone, the complex is environmentally ambitious, tracking LEED Platinum, leveraging photovoltaics, and boasting an impressively low EUI. The King Open/Cambridge Street Upper Schools and Community Complex set a shining example for civic projects of the future.
