Where Did Everyone Go?

I noticed this morning that all of the traffic in my Site Meter for last week seems to have vanished. Sunday through Friday all read zero traffic. And it's not like I have lots of traffic to spare, so this is a serious problem!

I checked the Site Meters of a few other blogs and the only other ones I saw with the problem were MuNu blogs - including this one - but not all of them.

I emailed the Site Meter people. There was no mention of a problem on the Site Meter blog page. You should check you site meters and see if you lost a week's worth of traffic too!

Lost My Wordpress Blog

Not sure exactly where I put it but it isn't there. When I browse to it, wspr.nickqueen.com, it acts like it never existed. The folder is also missing for it!

Help me Pixy Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope.

Resolving and redirecting my domain names

OK, first things first -- check out my slick new blog interface!

Now that this is out of the way...I have a question about resolving my domain names. It's a headscratcher. You see, I've started a job as Blogmaster for a company here in Canada, and I'm learning loads about search engine optimization. I've learned, for instance, that I've got a problem.

Each of my pages can be reached in eight(!) different ways:
angrygwn.mu.nu/xxx
www.angrygwn.mu.nu/xxx
stevejanke.com/xxx
www.stevejanke.com/xxx
stevenjanke.com/xxx
www.stevenjanke.com/xxx
stephenjanke.com/xxx
www.stephenjanke.com/xxx

From a search engine point of view, this looks like duplicate content, and it dilutes my ranking.

What I need to do, says the SEO, is use 301 redirects to a chosen domain. The 301 is a permanent redirect, and the search engines don't see that as duplicate content. So if I can have stevejanke.com be the target of the other 5 domains, I'll be sailing.

Uh, now what?

The Janke domains are on GoDaddy.com. Do I give them to you somehow so that the mu.nu domain servers respond to requests for those URLs? Do you set up the 301 redirects on the angrygwn domains? A big part of this is a mystery to me -- I think I sort of understand how this stuff works, but I'm probably missing a big part of understanding it.

Shit

When I had to reboot the server because we were getting flooded with spam, the firewall rule that I had set up to block outgoing spam was erased, so we started spamming other people.

The result of that spam is that we've been blacklisted with some spam filters, so even once the whole mess is cleaned up, you might not be able to get your email.

So, a little request for Munuvians: Never, ever, ever even think about putting a contact form on your site that lets people email you. These things are bug-ridden beyond belief, when they are not deliberately designed to act as spam gateways.

Well, Isn't That Ironic

Pixy, that email you sent me about spam in my contact form ended up in my Gmail spam filter.

Go figure.

If you missed my reply in the gobsmackingly vile amounts of email you get, my answer is yes, disable it if you must.

That's the only reason I posted this. Just so's you wouldn't miss my reply.

Oh, and this is weird. a week ago my computer took a dump. I had to do a full restore, wiping out everything.

Ever since then, when I log in and do a post to this blog or Jawa, once I hit save, it kicks me back out to the login screen. I have to re-login, hit save again, to get the post posted. Must be a quirk with MT.

A Holiday Bleg

As you may know, I'm going to Darfur this Christmas to help with a film documentary on Darfur, and I would be most appreciative if you could repost this on your blogs. Regardless of whether or not it generates cash, being that we live in a media world, publicity is a valuable coin in and of itself. So any stumping is axiomatically valuable. Most respectfully, BRD.

All I Want For Christmas (in Darfur)...

Judging by the newly arrived dcor I am seeing in storefronts, the holiday season is evidently upon us once again. As you already know, two friends and I are going to spend our holiday in Chad to film footage for a documentary (Christmas in Darfur), capture the feel of conditions on the ground, and interview the extraordinary people who have given and risked so much to lend a hand in a portion of the world that needs all the help it can get. I would like to thank those that have contributed for their help and generosity in getting us started towards our goals.

Our estimated budget for this project will run about $20,000, and weve been successful in scraping, begging, and borrowing enough to cover airfare and our basic film equipment. This does, however, leave us at something of a disadvantage with respect to providing the remainder of the gear well need to do this both competently and safely, not to mention funds we'll need on the ground.

So, I would like to ask for you or anybody you know to lending a helping hand. The main problem were facing is uncertainty. If we were certain that this was suicidally stupid, we wouldnt be going. If we were certain there was no risk, we wouldnt be asking for help. But one can hedge against uncertaintiy in risk through insurance, liquidity, preparedness, equipment, and all of these cost money.

You can show your support to the great and noble cause of my personal safety by clicking the PayPal button below. But in general, any way you can help us will be most appreciated. If you possess a quarter million frequent flier miles that need to be used by the end of the year, then we can devote our resources to basic equipment and tools of the trade.

Out Damn Fruitcake

Sorry about that folks.

When we get a lot of spam, and Fluffy has to repeatedly kill incoming spam comments, eventually the database server gets tired of connections dying and disables access to the database from the server that's causing the problems.

When that happens, you get fruitcake.

I've now set up a process that will monitor for this and fix it.

I HATE SPAMMERS!!!!!!!!!

Important DNS Changes

Hi everyone.

I've now transferred all DNS functions from our old hosting provider to our new servers.

This means that the problems some users were having should now stop.

It also means that I can stop paying for the old servers, which will be a great relief to my wallet this holiday season.

It also means something very important. When we originally migrated to the old servers (from the old old server) and had the DNS trouble, I suggested that, as a workaround, people could use the mu.nu servers as their DNS servers.

But after the end of November, those servers will no longer be available.

<shoutybit>
IF YOU CHANGED YOUR DNS SETTINGS SO THAT YOU COULD REACH MU.NU, YOU MUST CHANGE IT BACK AGAIN BEFORE THE END OF THE MONTH. OTHERWISE, YOUR INTERNET ACCESS WILL STOP WORKING. NOT JUST TO MU.NU; YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO GET ANYWHERE!
</shoutybit>

I'd suggest you leave it for a day or so while we make sure that the new DNS settings are working well, and then set it back to what it was originally. Check with your ISP if you aren't sure.

If you have any questions, post them here, or email me at andrew -at- pixymisa -dot- net.

And now, back to the War on Spam...

Oh yeah: One of our servers, Nabiki, will be going offline for up to two hours on Tuesday 21 November, between 5am and 7am CST, while our hosting company works on their power distribution. This will take out Ace and the Jawas, a couple of forums, and the Movable Type 2.x database. (Oh, and my blog. ;)) Your blogs will still be readable, but posting and commenting won't work during that time.

MTPublishCharset

Where does MTPublishCharset come from? It's showing up in my blog as iso-8859-1 and I want it to be UTF-8 (I think) so that non-Latin characters will show up.

Of course, I could hard-wire it - and I will if I have to - but I'd prefer to do it right.

(I know, I should have attended to this a long time ago, but you know, life sometimes intervenes...)

Are they not functioning again? I had a ton of spam to delete in MT, but none were e-mailed. There qwere some legit comments too, but none of these were e-mailed either.

MuNu world domination plan continues apace

It's once again time for the annual Weblog Awards and I think that MuNu blogs should win every category. For that to happen though, blogs have to get nominated. So go and nominate someone. Anyone. Everyone.

Hey, if all blog roads will lead to MuNu eventually, we might as well start paving those roads right now.

Cpanel

Pixie, I get an error message each time I try to log on to the Cpanel. Oddly enough, I was playing around in my laptop this evening and clicked on Cpanel and the password (saved on the laptop - not on my tower) came up but when I cliked enter/ok it fizzed out on me... then it was blank after that. I re-entered the password and again I got an error message... Well, technically not an error message, just the log in screen again. After the third attempt, that stops too and the CPanel X screen comes on with it's own log in.

I'm totally confused... I log into my blog MT.cgi with no problems at all.

Server Burpage

Looks like we just had our first hiccup with the new servers. I think it was probably just a spam overload; a quick reboot and all was fine again.

I'll keep an eye on things. But then, I always do. ;)

Minx Update/Jedi Mind Tricks

How's Minx coming along Pixie? I've had a major site redesign in mind for awhile now, but wanted to wait for Minx.

Also, I know that this question gets thrown in every once in awhile, but isn't there some way to implement a comment registration system? I have so many trolls that know how to thwart IP blocking that I'm seriously considering just closing comments altogether.

Jedi mind trick: I will start a comment registration system. These are not the droids we're looking for. Move along.

Comment management

I no longer get email notification of comments on my blog. I think it stopped around the time we went to the newest servers. Is this no longer a viable option? I've been dependent upon these notifications to know when to do some manual spam-busting.

I also would like to know if there is a way for me to manage my blog's comments without having to look at individual entries. I know in the editing menu there are listed the five most recent comments, but is there some way I can look at, say, the last 100 comments? Or all of them together? Granted, I don't have that many, but it would be nice to be able to go through the comments as a group, rather than individually. Is that capability already available, but I have somehow missed it?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

My deferred entries seem to be showing up too soon, and the time/date stamp on new entries seems rather odd...and it's not just an hour off for the daylight savings time...
