Hi all, I'm scratch building a Competition Asp, need to know what the wheelbase is? For the Manta Ray, what is the size of the front and rear tires and wheels, diameter and width? Thanx.

The body determines the WB.

The Asp can be up to 5 inches, way too long. I would like to use the original wheelbase. I know the Manta Ray body will determine its wheelbase. Thanx.

I tried to obtain the best measurement possible, I get 3.7".

I've got a wheelbase of 3-11/16" on my Competition Asp. vs/ about 3-13/16" on the regular Asp.
Assuming my Manta Ray has the original wheels (6 spoke, bare aluminum), the rears are 1-1/4" diameter and 3/8" wide on the tread (overall width a bit larger). The fronts are 1 x 1/4", or maybe a touch larger. There were a number of different versions on the Manta, so this may have changed.

May I add the guide pivot to rear axle has a greater effect on handling than w.b. So I would max that dimension, but still fit guide under the body IMO.

7/8" of guide lead is not uncommon for a light open wheel car.
Maybe check what has worked before here http://slotblog.net/...assis-drawings/

George,
I recently built a rather non-vintage anglewinder chassis for a Competition Asp body (posted over in the SB Scratchbuilding sub-forum in the CMF3 'just for fun' chassis thread) where the wheelbase is 3.875”, rear axle to guide pivot is 5.00”, and resulting guide lead of 1.125”. Admittedly unconventional, but I like the way it came out aesthetically and functionally.
Have fun!

Ok George ,This is what measurements I got on mine. These are 100% STOCK with ZERO modifications done to any of them.
ASP 3 7/8" inch wheel base.
Copetition ASP 3 11/16" inch wheel base
Manta Ray 4" inch wheel base.
As for the tire diameter on the Manta Ray , Don Siegel nailed it as far as i am getting.

Mainly that the Competition Asp has a 26D and the regular Asp a 16D; it also has color foam tires and I think it's a bit shorter and wider.

The Asp & Competition Asp also had different colored factory painted bodies. My Competition Asp (1967-68) came with black foam rears. I didn't like its handling, so quickly swapped it for a 26D Chaparral build on a Dynamic mag sidewinder. I still have this Dynamic chassis.
I intend to live forever! So far, so good.

Truescale at one time was offering the Competition Asp. I bought a couple at the time. I don't think he is shipping bodies at the present time. I wish he would be offering them again.

Anyone know where I can get a pair of Asp front tires?? I'm refurbishing a Competition Asp that has the small treaded tires on it. Im going to go with some o rings for now but would really like some original fronts.
