california avocado lobster roll

When I was growing up there were no avocados around. I was in the Middle East in the 70s and there were many foods such as avocados, figs, and squash that I had never been exposed to. I didn't have my first avocado until my college years. It took some time for me to grow into them. At first it was the avocado pasta salad I would make at my job at a fresh pasta store. (This has since become my favorite potluck dish to bring because it's always a hit.) Then I learned to appreciate guacamole.

We truly are spoiled with avocados in California. On the east coast it can be hard to even find avocados and a side of extra half avocado for a salad can cost $5. Californians enjoy avocados year round, no problem.

Right now we are in the middle of the season - March through September. It's no wonder we love it for summer barbecues. There are eight varieties of avocados grown commercially in California, with the Hass variety accounting for approximately 96 percent of the total crop volume. Bacon, Fuerte, Gwen, Lamb Hass, Pinkerton, Reed, Zutano and now the GEM varieties also are grown in the state.

Keto followers, like myself, have changed the old saying of "An apple a day..." to "An avocado a day..." The reason is because of the healthy fat, fiber, and nutrition packed into them.

  1. Heart-healthy California avocados provide “good” fats to one’s diet.

  2. California avocados are a heart-healthy fruit and a good source of fiber. Consuming foods rich in fiber may reduce the risk of heart disease, obesity and diabetes

  3. One-third of a medium avocado (50 g) contains 6% of the Daily Value for vitamin E, an antioxidant that protects body tissue from damage and helps keep the immune system strong.

  4. One-third of a medium avocado (50 g) has 80 calories and contributes nearly 20 vitamins and minerals, making it a nutrient-dense choice.

  5. California avocados act as a “nutrient booster” by helping increase the absorption of fat-soluble nutrients like vitamins A, D, K and E.

  6. California avocados are heart-healthy fruit that are naturally sodium-, cholesterol- sugar- and trans fat-free.
