The USS LaSalle LPD-3 was reconfigured to serve as the flag ship in the Persian Gulf. Note the strange looking awning on the flight deck. The LaSalle was the first LPD with flag quarters and has an unusual mast mounting. She was built in the Brooklyn Navy Yard in Brooklyn New York. Since she had to go under the Brooklyn Bridge, the mast had to have a hinge so it could be lowered in order to get under the bridge.
I served as the Electrical Officer, the Main Propulsion Assistant and the Auxiliary Division Officer. 1966 - 1969. I was promoted to LDO Ensign and transferred to Naval Development and Training Center NDATC 32nd Street San Diego, California.
