The LEGO Brand Store in Vienna had an advance sale of the LEGO Ideas Saturn V Apollo Rocket (21309) set and invited one half of the designing duo, Felix Stiessen to grace the event and conduct a meet the fans session!
Felix Stiessen is only 17 years old which I think makes him one of the youngest LEGO Ideas designer to ever have a set produced from their project.
Valérie Roche, who is the co-designer on the set, technically has never met Felix in person and collaborated on the LEGO Ideas project for their love of NASA and space exploration.
“The presentation of the actual model is also very important. You can build a great model but if the presentation isn’t good, it is not going to get any attention” ~Felix
The initial design was built using the LEGO Digital Designer and it was bounced back and forth between Felix in Austria and Valerie in France through a string of emails.
It took almost a full year of designing and refining before they submitted it to LEGO Ideas. It did not stop there as they kept updating and improving the design while the project was gaining support.
“What is good about LEGO Ideas is that you can post projects and you learn how to get better. Progressively your project quality increases”
Each person who turned up for the event was allowed to buy only one set of the Apollo rocket but they also had a chance to get Felix to sign the box.
LEGO Ideas Saturn V Apollo Rocket will be on sale worldwide on June 1st.
Fun Fact: There are actually two versions of the rocket. A deluxe version with interiors and fuel tanks and a basic version which is just the exterior that was much more economical to produce.
