Nava Mau’s Baby Reindeer Success Is A Reminder To Watch Her 3-Year-Old Show That Was Canceled After Only 1 Season

Summary In the hit Netflix series Baby Reindeer, Nava Mau plays Teri, whose relationship with the male lead Donny is complicated by Donny's obsessive stalker and his own deep-rooted shame and trauma.

Before Baby Reindeer, Mau made her television debut as Greta's trans aunt Ana in the Max series Generation, which was praised for its authentic portrayal of LGBTQ+ youth.

After getting canceled by Max in 2021 after just one season, Generation was subsequently removed from the platform in 2022 amid the Warner Bros. and Discovery Inc. merger.

Baby Reindeer, the hit Netflix miniseries starring actress Nava Mau, can be followed up with the only season of Mau's first-ever TV show from 2021. Serving as a screen adaptation of Scottish comedian Richard Gadd's one-man show of the same name, Baby Reindeer is based on the true story of Gadd's own experience with an older female stalker. In this dramatized retelling of real-life events, Gadd plays the fictionalized version of himself named Donny while Jessica Gunning plays his stalker, who is given the pseudonym Martha.

In addition to Gadd and Gunning, the Baby Reindeer cast also includes Mexican-American filmmaker and actress Nava Mau as Teri, a trans woman Donny meets under the alias Tony on a dating website. Teri quickly becomes Donny's love interest and eventually his girlfriend, but Martha's violent antics and Donny's own deep-rooted shame and trauma interfere with their relationship. Prior to making an impression as Teri in the critically acclaimed Baby Reindeer, Mau made her television debut in a groundbreaking Max series from 2021 that was gone far too soon.

After Baby Reindeer, Make Sure To Watch Nava Mau's Critically Acclaimed Show Generation

Nava Mau Played Greta's Aunt Ana On Generation

Before her welcomed return to the small screen in Baby Reindeer on Netflix, Mau's first and only other onscreen TV role was in the Max coming-of-age series, Generation (stylized as Genera+ion). Mau's character in Generation, Ana, was a hip makeup enthusiast who took in her teenage niece Greta (Haley Sanchez) and younger nephew Miguel (Lucas Armendariz) after their mother, Sela (Patricia De Leon), was deported. As a trans woman who was not always accepted by her own family, Ana serves as a queer role model and a maternal figure for Greta and her friends.

Though she never starred, Mau co-wrote eight and directed nine episodes of season 2 of the LGBTQ+ TV series Hidden Canyons in 2022.

The first three episodes of Generation premiered on Max on March 11, 2021. The season was split into two parts, with the finale airing on July 8, 2021. During its run, Generation was praised for its representation of LGBTQ+ youth and handling of sensitive, complex topics. The series maintains a 75% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes and an even higher audience score of 84%, with many reviews highlighting Generation's bold exploration of sexuality and identity among Gen Z teens within their conservative community of Orange County, California.

Why Generation Was Canceled By Max After Only 1 Season (& Removed From The Streaming Service)

Generation's Only Season Was Removed From Max's Library Less Than A Year After The Show Was Canceled

Sadly, Generation's life was cut shortly after it began. On September 14, 2021, just over two months after season 1 ended, Generation was canceled by Max. The series lasted only one season, proving to be a disappointment for many fans who became invested in the stories of Greta, Riley, Chester, and more. Though no explicit reason was given for Generation's cancelation, Max reps stated that they were grateful to have been able to collaborate with father-daughter co-creators Zelda and Daniel Barnz "to faithfully and authentically represent LGBTQ youth with such a diverse group of characters and layered stories."

Generation's erasure from the streamer's catalog was due to the merger between Max's parent company Warner Bros. and Discovery Inc.

As if Max's cancelation of the series wasn't shocking enough, Generation was removed from the platform altogether less than a year later, in August 2022. Generation's erasure from the streamer's catalog was due to the merger between Max's parent company Warner Bros. and Discovery Inc., resulting in the mass removal of many movies and TV shows from Max's library. Thankfully, Generation found a new home on Tubi in February 2023 and is currently available to stream for free, allowing viewers to tune in to the Nava Mau series on Tubi after watching Baby Reindeer on Netflix.
