The square appears to be distorted. In addition, we can see an afterimage.

"Bloch-Gafter's effect"
The four diamonds in each panel have the same gradation (left image), but they appear to be differernt in lightness when combined (right image). In the upper panel, the right or left diamonds appear to be darker than the upper or lower ones. In the lower panel, inversely, the right or left diamonds appear to be lighter than the upper or lower ones.

Akiyoshi's comment: They guessed that this is a varient of the Craik-O'Brien-Cornsweet effect, which I disagree with. In my opinion, this image should be characterized by perceptual transparency.
