Making a Splash

I absolutely love the RN Estudio Blood Bowl miniatures (there are also non Blood Bowl figures as well!), and this is another great example.

This was painted during a few recent hangouts, and it was very fun.  All of the miniatures from the team are very well sculpted and cast with excellent quality resin... minimal mould lines too!

I have a few other blog posts showing other members of the team:

The purple to turquoise transition is also a favorite.  With all the muscles sculpted into it, there were even more opportunities for those transitions.  All of the details are very sharp, which is very handy!  They are also very "compact" and sturdy for resin figures, which means they are reasonably viable to a rough and tumble game like Blood Bowl!!

The water effects were quite simple, using the Liquitex Heavy Gloss Gel.  It was built up in multiple layers, which allowed me to "extend" the splashes a bit more with each layer applied.

I have done this on a number of figures, and on bases as waterfalls, etc.

Protect the Shield

Here's the first set of images from a recently painted Dark Elf team.  This is from Iron Golems, and they call it the Blackfire Cavaliers:

There were several specific requests regarding colors, and even the series of shields that you see along the bases.  Those represent various 'houses' of Switzerland I believe.  Since there are a few dozen of them, I had to rotate those shields on various figures (I could get 8 on a base comfortably).

The team involved 20 figures in all, including the trophy turn marker, the ball, etc.  As far as the bases, those were resin (don't know the origin).

Each figure is pinned to the base, as usual.  I'll post the rest of the team soon, so stay tuned!

Blood and Ice on the Pitch

These Rolljordan Blood Bowl figures were very different from the told GW Norse figures that I had painted in the past.

I used the same kind of "Primer Painting" technique on these guys that I had on the Beastmen that I had been working on recently.  This group was particularly reliant on the post primer glazes!

This is also one of the very critical reasons that I used many layers of the Stynlrez primers, because Blood Bowl figures can spend much of the game face down or flipped over.  That is a lot of extra abuse that most figures don't see.

Speaking of the primers, there will be a new website where you can get them, with an easier layout to find what you need.  If you use the discount code Wappellious, you will get a nice chuck off the order :-)

I also tried out a new snow technique on this group.  Originally, it was supposed to be for terrain, but lo and behold, it is a very sturdy, very quick way to get some nice fluffy snow!

I put down the Vallejo Ground Texture snow first, piling it up like I do with the Oxide Paste and other mediums.  While that is still wet, sprinkle some of the snow flock on top.  It gives a very nice added texture!

You can even add a little bit of sky blue paint to the snow to give it a bit of a tint, and make it more icy.

Sub Sandwich

Step aside Puggy Baconbreath... we have something more "official" for the Halflings.

He really puts the "club" in club sandwich!

Coin Flip

Joining the collection of the original Dwarf and Human refs from ages ago, we have the Goblin and Halfling versions.  These have a bit more character than the original counterparts, since they are really doing stuff that is either part of the game process, or more associated with that particular species :-)

I do enjoy the "Hospitality Funds" that are at this goblin's feet!

Kick Off

I enjoy all of the Sukubus Studios figures, and they are now up to four teams at this point, making more of those fantastic sculpts for my eager brushes to paint.

The figures all have stunning details, and they are very sturdy despite how dainty they may look.

Another favorite trait on Sukubus Studios figures would be the one piece nature of the casts.  It amazes me how dynamic these one piece figures can be!  You don't have to deal with many mould lines, and the Badger Airbrush Stynlrez sticks to them very well.

I decided to sculpt a few tentacles on the bases of this Demonette team.

Here's a link to the Sukubus site... be sure to check it out!

Holding the Line

As some of you already know, I love the figures created by RN Estudios for their Blood Bowl teams, along with a variety of other fantasy figures.

The casts are always very clean and solid, just like this Lizardman figure.

The vast majority of the figures are one piece, and mould lines are minimal.  They are also very easy to prime.  Badger Airbrush Stynlrez primer is outstanding for this purpose.

The base is relatively simple, in keeping with the swamp bases of the rest of the team.  I used some Secret Weapon Miniatures Realistic Water mixed with a touch of greenish brown paint.  A few layers of this combination helped to achieve a 'depth' to the water.

The sharp and precise details not only look great, but they make painting these so much easier!  It allows me to do all kinds of fun glazing techniques, utilizing the details of the figure.

When working on 'fuzzier' casts and sculpts, things get more protracted since I actually have to paint in all those details myself.

Check out this team and so many other wonderful figures on their site:

End Zone

Another blast from the past!  Here we have a few converted skeletons and zombies for an Undead Blood Bowl team.

I had some fun with the skin tones on the zombies... varying the colors from one to the next, and balancing all the greens against the purples, pinks and reds.  The purple was the key element in the transition between them, since green and purple make a grey as opposed to brown.

That grey is a nice 'dead' flesh color, as opposed to brown, which is what you will get from a green/red mix!

The purple is also handy, since that's part of the uniform colors!

Nothing crazy on the bases... just something to make them look like they are on a Blood Bowl pitch :-)

I went with a more intense green set on the right hand zombie, and that turned out to be a great contrast to the warmer purple color.  The colors on the guts were cooled down a bit to compensate.

Sideline Assassin

We first started with our miniature painting adventures with Blood Bowl miniatures, and 16 years later that journey continues!  Now of course, we have many exceptional new companies making  fantastic teams like this one from Sukubus Studio.  You have seen several of the demonette figures so far, but you will be see other teams here in the future as well.

The Vakyrie and Dark elf teams are just as wonderful, with easy to paint details on the face, armor, etc.  It makes life a whole lot easier!  Stay tuned for more...

Demons of the pitch

Continuing with the Sukubus studio demonette team, we see another example of limited palette exercise .

There's a wide range of magenta and purple put to use... some of the tones tinted more reddish ,  others towards blue.

In addition, some of these tones are more saturated and intense, while others are quite muted in contrast.

It is these differences in tone and intensity that allowed me to organize a number of complex surfaces in a cohesive way, despite the limited color palette .

March of the Valkyries

You have seen me paint some of the amazing succubus team created by Sukubus studios.  Now I'm looking forward to their even more incredible Valkyrie team!  I was impressed by the concept art, and the actual figures were stunning.

There are so many aspects to these which make these some of my favorite Blood Bowl figures.  The sculpts have character, action, and so on, but all in one piece!!!

Yes, that's right, every single one of these is a single piece cast.  No pinning or gluing for worry about!  It's hard to believe how few mold lines are created in this process too.  You won't have to deal with many at all!

Like I said, plenty of movement and action to the poses!

They are also very sturdy, perfect for some rough action on the pitch.

You have some support staff as well, with some Bloodweiser Babes and a team physician.  Some guys just won't want to leave that locker room.

The Ulfwereners and Snow Troll are definitely scary enough!  That's probably the most dynamic pose I have seen for a "Big Guy"... or gal.

Here are a few team portaits.  I'm trying to nail down a basing strategy for them, with a focus on some kind of ice theme.  I may experiment with some crackle medium mixed with clear paints.

So stay tuned for the painting stage on these ladies of the North!  It should be very fun.
